D500 Exposure and AF won't display on top

The first picture is my sister-in-law's D500 top LCD, the second one is mine. The exposure  +/- indicator and AF is not visible on hers. Is this a setting that I can't seem to find? Is there another reason? Any help would be appreciated.

I believe your sister-in-law's camera could have the camera AF/M focus switch turned to the "M" position which explain the auto focus mode indicator but not the absent exposure compensation indicator.

Good call on the lens being set to manual (M) focus. That would explain it.

The in-camera meter (along with f-stop, shutter speed and ISO) displays on my top LCD for only a brief time after turning the camera ON, turning on the light or half-depressing the shutter release. After about 10 seconds those displays go away. It's similar to the behavior of the same displays in the viewfinder.

I thought that was it too but she just sent me a pic of the AF/M switch. It's in AF. I wonder if it's the Tamron lens she's using. 70-200 G2

Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 G2. Its switch is in the AF position.

FWIW, I have the gen 1 Tammy 70-200 f/2.8 Di VC USD and, when mounted to my D500, the autofocus mode displays on the top LCD. With the Tamron mounted to D610 and D90 bodies, the AF mode also displays on the top LCDs.

Re: D500 Exposure and AF won't display on top

Hmmmm….some other ideas (but this is now brainstorming);

in the following order

Check firmware is up to date.

Try another lens

Perform a reset to default settings, see page 230 of the manual.

If that doesn't fix it (assuming this is with another lens), and short of any other ideas forthcoming, then it may need to be sent to Nikon.

Re: D500 Exposure and AF won't display on top

As previously asked, is the focus mode selector on the front of the camera set to AF? You need to briefly half press the shutter button to update the control panel after changing focus mode.

In manual mode, the exposure compensation display represents the relative under or over exposure at the current settings. It is only shown when metering is active. In other modes, the exposure compensation is also only shown when metering is active. However, a +/- indicator is always displayed when when any offset is applied.
