Looking to get into Fuji for street.

Greetings my fine Fuji shooting friends.  I'm looking to get into Fuji shooting primarily for street work, as well as a fun addition to a range of other shoots.  This is a side that is a fun side off my main pursuits so I can't dish out much cash so I'm hoping to pick up the least expensive Fuji which is around the range of pocketable (even if larger pockets), and so obviously can be an older model, but still has support for those unique Fuji profiles like classic chrome etc.  I've seen a list of the Fuji bodies which support those but I'd love the input from the community about your favorites in these since I'm not too familiar with the Fuji line.  Naturally snappy autofocus is a must, and I'm open to fixed lens (preferably with a good F2 option, but I'd be open to anything up to 2.8).

The list for convenience, to my knowledge at the moment:

  • X70
  • X100T
  • X-A2
  • X-A3
  • X-A10
  • X-E2
  • X-E2S
  • X-Pro2
  • X-T1
  • X-T2
  • X-T10
  • Porbably more since the thread I read.

Thank you for any ideas and input!

Depends on budget.  Cheap = X-E2S with 27mm or 35mm.  Expensive = X-Pro3 + sky's the limit.  Also consider X100F.  Just a couple of numerous options.  Can you fix a price range?

X-H1 (IBIS enacted)with the pancake 27mm. The X-T30 would also be a good choice - with the pancake 27mm. Small, unobtrusive, and very light.

Im soooo happy with my xt10 since 2015, recomendation with 35f2 and/or 23f2, look also 27 pancake (i missed too much the aperture ring)

My opinion is in term of IQ with the xt10 you have more than enough, if you need any addicional feature, look any newer body.

What's your preferred FL for street? Do you prefer ILC or a fixed prime lens camera? What's your budget range? Do you need an OVF?

This! XT30 with 27mm is magical - very small, very capable, very fun to use.

I started with an X-E3, then picked up an X-E2 for $250 body only. The X-E2 is usually a little less than the X-E2s.  With the most current update it is virtually the same.

The X-E2 isn't as quick as the X-E3, but it focuses fast enough. It creates lovely images.  Pick up a used version of the Fuji 23mm f2 and you're in business.

The X-E3 because it’s small and light and it has faster af and better tracking af than the older X-E models. Pair it with the F2 lenses or the ultra compact 27 2.8 pancake and you got one of the best street shooters. With the 27 you can put it in a coat pocket. 👍🏻

After all is said and done and your photo is hanging on the wall, no one is going to know or care what camera, lens, or what post processing you used. All they care about is if the image moves them.
I’m not hung up on the Bokeh fad because I’m too busy chasing shadows.

Personally, for street, I like waist shooting and for that a tilt screen is a must. So the X-E2 and X100T are out of the list.

Then it needs to be small enough so that can put easily in a large pocket and take it out fast. The smallest one that can actually fit in a side pocket is the X70, so that would be one of my 1st choices in the list. I actually have one and love it, but AF is a bit on the slow, compared to current standards.

My 2nd option from that list would be the X-T10 because its small and can take some of the fantastic Fuji primes such as my favorite 35/f2 or the smaller 27/f2.8. I would avoid the X-A line because I think its has slower AF and from what I remember (from a short time with the XA10) the build quality is worse.

The X-T1 and X-T2 would be my last options purely because of larger size (not too big, but not pocketable either). Otherwise the X-T2 is the best camera on this list and its still small with one of those lenses.

XT30 with 27mm pancake or 35/2 would be ideal for street.

For me, the xt30 with 18f2 lens. Small and snappy. Perfect focal length for street.

X-M1 with the 27mm.

Series 1 Fuji array - still the best jpegs for people shots, but with processor and some featured from the next generation WIFI, Smart auto, and a flip out screen for street shots.

Big discounts when it was discontinued, so some good deals used.

Light, fits in a (large) pocket, looks good.  Still gets more use than my X-T2.

Any camera with your favourite focal length for street will work.

Re: Looking to get into Fuji for street.

No fixed price range, but literally least expensive possible.  No way am I spending over $300 for it anytime soon, which may means it waits a while.  If I can't find it used on Ebay/etc. it won't be happening at full ticket prices.  So I may just have to hunt on ebay until I find one that randomly goes for under normal used price, depending.  It's a camera I really want for some very satisfying work, but with other expenses and the fact that I love my main camera as it is, much harder to justify the play money right now.  Won't stop me from trying, however!

Re: Looking to get into Fuji for street.

I'm open to a range of focal lengths with street work.  It depends on if I have something in mind, and where I'm going.  In packed places like Pikes Place or other street markets, a long lens isn't going to work, but in busy city areas that are less market style packed, I enjoy 50-80mm to get some portrait focus shots or get reach at times.  However, I'm quite open to a 24-35mm equivalent range fixed lens.

While a view finder would be fun, I don't feel a need.
I don't have a price range, but literally as cheap as possible on the used market without being something someone wouldn't want to use, like something with slow to moderate autofocus, or missing the fuji profiles I want, etc.

Re: The best is not on your list

Does it support the fuji profiles like classic chrome?  The list I found was from 2 years ago and change so I expected there to be more added to the list, but am just too unfamiliar with the line, knowing newer cameras since then will be outside of my budget.

Re: Looking to get into Fuji for street.

And yet any camera at my favorite focal length doesn't fit the specifics I asked about in the original post.  I already have one of those...it doesn't have fuji presets, it doesn't fit in my pocket with anything more than the lens cap lens, etc....

For under $300 I would get a used XE2 with the 16-50mm kit zoom. The lens is lightweight and miles faster focusing than older lenses like the 18mm f2 and probably the 27mm f2.8. The zoom has markings for 23mm and 35mm making it easy to set and forget at classic focal lengths. Having 16mm is fun too, plus 50mm is often useful.

It is an extremely easy camera to use, thanks to the simple controls. Just have a Classic Chrome "recipe" set on custom profile one and Monochrom with red filter recipe on 2. I shot B&W so it was just one button press to switch to classic chrome.

If you get along with it well, you can then keep an eye out for a used 23mm f2 which works well on the camera. If you prefer older lenses definitly try before buying as they can be painfully slow on older bodies and strangely noisy.

Re: Looking to get into Fuji for street.

*While the 27mm is small and unobtrusive - the approx. 40mm FF field of view is not for everybody when it comes to how you personally see a scene ; how you see a composition ? For me , a 40mm focal length had me wishing for a 35mm FF view most often followed by a 50mm FF view ... Try before you buy if possible .
