a Question of MP Size - MFT

I'm considering a back-up camera to my Panasonic G9...

My first (and only) choice would be a GX9, if I don't get a second G9.  When reviewing the GX9, I read comparisons to the GX85 (I have one) and the discussion started that the GX9 is really an updated GX85, not updated GX8.  I had a GX7 and it was a fantastic camera (and I wasn't as pleased with the GX8.)

Anyway...the GX85 has a 16 MP sensor, the GX9 a 20 MP sensor.  A number of reviewers suggested that unless video is a selling point (not for me), the GX85 might be a better choice.

So...there is more to the sensor than size...?

most of the time you only need less than 8 mp, but If you crop alot you may want 20 mp.

Since I don't know your final output, I could not be fully certain with any answer.

At today's price grab a second G9. There is a lot of content for the buck in that camera..

The GX9 has a tilting EVF and a dedicated AF/MF switch like your GX7 does and the GX85 does not.

You can also read this article that does a good job of comparing the two:

Not all mft, not even all 20MP MFT sensors are made the same. The sensor of the E-m1ii and e-m5iii are a step forward (around 1/2EV better) compared to the previous 16/20MP sensors, which were about the same.

You must be reading my mind.  I've been thinking on this quite a bit and am about ready to pounce.  I do like variety and having two similar but different cameras is an appealing feature.  I am very fond of smaller gear, too.

But then the G9 is quite good for sure.  I have a GX85 but I really don't like the camera at all.  I will be retiring it from active duty.   Since the GX9 isn't really the next gen of the GX8, the G9 does make sense...and good pictures, too.

I think I need to read up on camera sensors.  Thanks.
