Hi,
I was thinking of buying the E-M5 III (we’ll still thinking) to upgrade my beautiful metallic E-M5 II with higher view finder resolution and bigger battery (π), but then I saw this beautiful black, even lighter and portable new E-PL10. It can be my second body and matches perfectly with my three lenses 17, 25 both 1.8 and EZ pancake zoom.
But I can’t believe is equal to the E-PL9 that is 50% cheaper, so guys do you know which improvements did they add apart from external design and the possibility to reduce/increase their art filters?
i really like this camera, even if itβs £599 body only and on eBay I can find the discontinued Pen-F for a similar price π
I read that the E-PL10 will only be sold in the UK via the Olympus webshop, though with an extra free lens, the 45mm f1.8. Don't know how long that offer lasts, and whether it will stay limited to there.
Aside from the colours, the E-PL9 and E-PL10 are physically identical. I am not sure if you are aware that they are polycarbonate bodied, not metal like the E-PL3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 (I mention this since you seem to value metal build) - the E-PL1 and E-PL2 had metal fronts and polycarbonate backs - actually the E-PL3 to E-PL7 inclusive did have a plastic "island" on the top, between the two metal halves and the E-PL1 and 2 had a polycarbonate rim onto which the front metal shell and back polycarbonate shell were mounted, come to think of it.
These two cameras do not have compatibility with any optional EVF as they lack the Accessory Port, unlike all the previous E-PL models.
They share lineage with the E-M10 Mark III, so like it, they have very reduced menus and options, configurations etc. and the number of functions assignable to any customisable button is fewer. No MySets or Custom modes.
They do have a pop-up flash, missing since the E-PL2, and a hot shoe, but unlike the other recent OM-D models, it doesn't have the power contact for the nice little FL-LM3 tilt and swivel flash (even the EM-10 Mark III can use that). IBIS is 3-axis, like the original E-M10.
There is one more significant improvement IMHO to the E-PL10 over the E-PL9 though - it has silent shutter mode available in PASM modes. The E-PL9 was the first E-PL model to have a silent shutter facility at all, but only in its own program-only sub-mode on the AP position of the dial, which is a more restricted type than P mode, as many items such as the strength of the noise filter, the ability to turn off "Keep Warm Color" in AWB and so forth are missing. Also, turning the mode dial to AP always resets all the configurations of the modes within it to the factory defaults, whatever your settings elsewhere are (those remain intact) - things like the focus point pattern, always sets to Vivid mode, and so on. You can change some of them to your preference and it will remember them session to session - until you leave AP mode. The E-PL10 also has these restrictions, as does the E-M10 Mark III, as it still has the AP mode simplified/restricted Silent sub-mode - the E-PL10 is the only one of the three to also have the "proper" silent shutter option like other recent OM-D models except the E-M10 Mark III though.
Just so you are aware of the potential restrictions of these two cameras and the one improvement on the E-PL10 versus the E-PL9 (aside from the ability to tweak the strength of the Art Filters - also new for this model, but you already know about that one).
