Hope you have a good copy, mine gets noticeably soft starting around 135mm and is virtually useless after 200 mm.  Even in the wide end its never really that sharp either.

This is an old relic from the film era and really needs to be discontinued.

You are in a small minority, you might actually be all by yourself. Most consider that lens to be one of Canon's worst.

Thank you for going to the trouble of taking the time to write such an in-depth review. Just imagine how excited you'd be with one of Canon's better lenses.

By the way, your "!" key appears to be sticking.

Varying results perhaps?

I'd agree with what has been said - not the most informative review, and there is something wrong with your ! key.

Then I wanted to post a link comparing the image quality of the lens to better lenses at The Digital Picture, but I found that the quality depicted using an EOS 5Ds R and 1Ds mkIII are very inconsistent . The 1Ds mkIII images support the notion that the lens is one of the worst performers, but the 5Ds R images show a somewhat different picture - here the lens is not far from i.e. the 70-300 IS USM .

So, now I do not know what to think of it.

Re: love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was my first EF telephoto lens and I think I have paid $129 for it new.  I used it on my D30 back in the day and even got a few photos published in some photography magazines with it.  Mine was pretty decent, especially stopped down to f/8.  I haven’t tried one on a modern camera but back with the old 3 and later the 6MP APS-c sensors it seemed pretty decent.  I ended up selling mine along with my D60.

I think this is one of those lenses that there is likely to be lots of copy to copy variation.  How much QC can you expect for such an inexpensive lens?

It only looks less horrible on the 5Ds R because of how the test image is so much bigger. I doubt anyone is buying that lens for either of those bodies.

Sorry, the 75-300 lens still looks far worse than the 70-300. It just looks better than the other camera because your not seeing as much of the test image.

If you want to buy a 5Ds R and put that lens on it, feel free to do so.

Why are you not sticking to the topic - I never said anything about me wanting to buy either.

It is pretty obvious on the 1Ds mkIII test that the lens is very blurry at 300 mm with lots of chromatic aberation as well. This should be even more visible with a higher resolution camera, not the other way around. Do the same test/comparison with some other lenses.

One and done?

I'll give the 75-300 credit for satisfying people on a budget.

My point was, why would you put that lens on those body’s to compare. No one will ever do that in a real world situation. And, it still looks horrible on the 5Dr S, just not as horrible as on the 1Ds.
