Re: Your opinions, please:

Yeah.. that sometimes happens. These are arranged for me to view them by parallel gaze. It does occasionally happen that some need to view such a pair by crossed gaze. Did you try both techniques?

Did you view the galaxy by parallel or crossed gaze?

This occasional inconsistency of common sense has certainly puzzled me, and I was told by two experienced optometrists that it is not unusual and likely is involved somehow with the “dominant eye” phenomenon. I’ve not yet found an explanation in the literature.

here is another 2d-to-3D conversion of a sphere arranged for parallel gaze.

How does this look!

Hi, Wayne,
Thanks for registering your opinion on this galactic pair.
Would you also please comment on the image pair originally posted in this thread - the crane in flight.

Come to think of it, I checked back and find that you have never mentioned your age. It would be a helpful addition to my data set if you would consent to do so.

many thanks,

Dave

Nor bad.  The black surround helps fusing (IMO).

It does appear to be a flat image wrapped around a cylindrical tube, however..,

Re: For 82Virago

Those are typical of the other stunning conversions I have seen.  Very comfortable to view!

They may not be conversions. They can be CGI images created using real data about relative distances between celestial bodies, colors, luminosity and other data (as made by Hipparcos).
Some 3D images of celestial bodies are obtained from real pair of images obtained at long interval in time. An example is the stereo image of the Veil Nebula , obtained from a pair of observations made by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope in 1997 and in 2015 (!).

Re: For 82Virago

Impressive.  I did not realize that proper motions of the filaments were so large.

Re: For 82Virago

The Solar System is traveling at an average speed of 230 km/s (828,000 km/h) within its trajectory around the galactic center, so in 18 years we can have a pretty large stereo base.

Re: For 82Virago

Hi, Gunner,

Now THAT’s an impressively logical approach to quantitating  an aspect of essential perspective of the requisite base!

I am supposing that this refers to our own galaxy, so would we not need, in the interest of time, to focus on a feature  - say a solar system - within our galaxy that is most distant from (and thus directly oppositeto...) our position within our shared galaxy - considering that we are fortuitously positioned rather near the outer edge thereof?

Kudos! Great food for thought!

I found that Veil Nebula lies within our own galaxy, so the stereoscopic illusion has nothing to do with the trajectory of our Solar System due to the rotation of the entire galaxy...

The 3D illusion is created only due to the movements of the filaments between the two observations.

My mistake!
