Does Panasonic DMC-G7 / G85 have manual focus ?

Hi

I will maybe buy a DMC-G7 or a DMC-G85.

I used DPREVIEW Camera Feature Search and i'm suprised to see that they are hidden when i check the "Manual Focus" feature.

Is it a mistake ? Can you confirm that both have a manual focus feature ?

They do.

It’s actually visible in the cameras’ specs sheets in dpreview for the G7 https://m.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonic-lumix-dmc-g7/2

For the G85, the line for MF is missing from the specs table but you can for instance look at the picture of the rear side of the camera at

https://m.dpreview.com/products/panasonic/slrs/panasonic_dmcg85 and you will notice top right the focus switch with an MF position available.

All Panny support MF.

Some bodies, e.g. G85 has a dedicated key/rocker to switch among AFS/AFC/MF, some models, e.g. GX85 has the AF/MF hidden in one of the fn keys with other features...

And it is an operation specific for Panny bodies and native M43 lenses: keep shutter half pressed, turn the focus ring on the lens will enter MF mode. Release the half pressed shutter will return to AF mode. No key is required for the switching.

Yes, they both have manual focus and many MF aids such as focus peaking and focus magnification.

I owned a G7 until I replaced it with a G85 which remains my main camera.

As others have mentioned, the G85 has a rocker switch under the shutter to switch between single auto focus, continuous focus, and manual focus.

Some lenses have the option to move the focus ring to switch to manual focus.  Mostly it is the Olympus mid/upper end lenses, but the new Panasonic 10-25mm f/1.7 lens has this ability.  The downside is if you engage the focus clutch ring by accident, you wonder why your lens is not focusing.   Olympus mid/upper bodies have an option to disable this feature.  So far, I don't think Panasonic has an option.

Besides just supporting manual focusing, the cameras have the ability to enlarge an area of the screen so you can better tell if something is in focus, and/or use the focus peaking that will indicate when things are in focus.

In the G85 advanced manual, look at pages 104-105, 116, and 212-215.

You need the "AF+MF" option turned on (custom menu) for that to work. I had it turned off. I've sometimes wanted to do that, and didn't know you could. Now I've turned the option on.
