The 90mm f/2.0 was too good. So I returned it. Locked

Re: I changed my 56mm for the 90mm!

I firmly believe that everyone’s entitled to their opinion but, in this instance, my experience differs from that of the OP. A quick look at the Lenstip resolution charts shows there is a world of difference between the 56mm & the 90mm:

https://www.lenstip.com/420.4-Lens_review-Fujifilm_Fujinon_XF_56_mm_f_1.2_R_Image_resolution.html

and

https://www.lenstip.com/446.4-Lens_review-Fujifilm_Fujinon_XF_90_mm_f_2_R_LM_WR_Image_resolution.html

They show that at f2 and f2.8 the 90mm beats the 56mm by a large margin, but the 56mm is better at smaller apertures, which makes one wonder about the point of it as it is, I imagine, mostly bought for very wide aperture use.

My 56mm lens sometimes didn’t focus fast enough for event photography but was OK for static subjects, whereas the 90mm is simply outstanding at full bore & one or two stops down - and with no focusing problems.

However, to be fair there is always the problem of sample variation and, of course, there is more to IQ than simply resolution, so your 56mm may be very different. As always, it’s best to test each new lens to make sure it does what you need!

Just my observations and certainly not the final word on the issue! As always YMMV!

Not for the first time, looking at his other posts.

90mm too sharp...interesting that a lens has a soul. Hasselblad made Softar filters because lens too sharp especially on skin tones. Some criticism of 56mm so bought 50mm f2 which is nicely balanced on X-T3.

I am sorry, but after reading things like:

"it’s just that the focus hunts too much on a Fuji X-Pro2"

"And so while this lens is great, it isn’t the pinnacle of optics. Don’t worry: it’s good enough for 99% for the majority of the users. I’m just not satisfied by anything but the best."

And then the link goes to a car?

And all that follows is ridiculous.

The words "click" and "bait" spring to mind.

This guy is just abusing DP Review. I note that on his other thread "preaching some sense" (that's quite an ego) he didn't reply to any of it.

Agreed that comments like "it’s good enough for 99% for the majority of the users. I’m just not satisfied by anything but the best." say more about the writer than the lens.

"The autofocus is not the best and I would not feel comfortable shooting a wedding with this lens": well I'm perfectly comfortable shooting weddings with the 56mm f/1.2 so to say that the 90mm isn't good enough for weddings is just nonsense.

I think we're probably just falling for it by discussing it. Maybe we should just ignore these threads, at least until he starts writing some sense and at least gets someone to proof read them for him.

I can't say I disagree with you. I've never used the lens, but to me the images from it have seemed "clinical," to use your choice of word. But with a cropped sensor lens you get what you pay for. My last lens with any soul was the Tokina ATX 90mm Macro, The Bokina. I sold it many years ago. That being said, my Pentax system runs head and shoulders around my Fuji system when it comes to those special images that pop with soul and a story. Don't get me wrong. I love my Fuji and the few OIS stabilized lenses that I own, but there's just something about a K1 with a legacy lens that is a world of a difference.

Yep, he's a bit of a troll, but has done it well.

I love the 90mm.   I thought soul and character is exactly what it does have.    I may end up selling it because I also like the Viltrox 85 and that would allow me to cover that range acceptably and save a little coin, but it is the exact thing that makes me hesitate.  That 90 has a special look.

the photographer provides the soul

Musicians = soul. Speakers = quality and accuracy.

Photographers = soul. Lenses = quality and accuracy.

You shouldn't be looking for equipment to provide the soul in your photos.
