How to Un-Stick the back of a Minolta Maxxum 7

This got posted in "DIY and Photo Experiments" and I guess I'm a new member there (2003) I'm re-posting it here:

The Minolta Maxxum 7's sticky back seems to have gotten sticky on some cameras, not all since I have two.

Elsewhere there is advice to use Isopropyl Alcohol (I tried it) or Talcum Powder to cure the stick. Another idea that seems to be floating around is to put selbstklembendeplastikfolie (plastic adhesive film) over the stickyness. That of course works, but I haven't tried it so I don't know how well.

What I do know is that "Fast Cure Seam Sealant" by Gear Aid from REI painted on with a medium artists brush works. It could be liquid latex, I don't know. But after one coat no more stickyness. I plan to add an additional coat for good measure. Is it waterproof? It's for tents, don't you think? How does it look? Not perfect, but good enough for me, really not bad.  What more could you ask?

I've a few Dynax 7's , cleaning them with IPA took just a few minutes and they look good as new with no stickiness .

A permanent solution that doesn't alter the cameras apperence .

I would prefer this to daubing a layer of something on it .

.

Could you post some pictures of the camera after application ?

Hi Neil -

Is IPA what I think that it is, - that is Indian Pale Ale ??

Or am I missing something here, in relation to this vastly spread camera/lens disease?

Please enlighten me...

Isopropyl alcohol worked for me too. I bought a Maxxum 7 from KEH last winter. It was a bargain buy because of the sticky back. When I received the camera, it felt like someone had spilled syrup on it at some point, it was that sticky.  But the alcohol removed the stickiness just fine, & the camera was in otherwise excellent condition.

I think the sugars in that might make your camera stickier !

It's isopropyl alcohol I mean .

Don't mix your bottles up while cleaning the camera , I can't imagine the latter tastes so good !

.

If your cleaning your camera get some stocking net cloth . We sell them over here a dish cloths , it's a very coarse cloth so cleans things easier .

A piece of fine cloth would tend to slide around easier and would take more effort .

There is a thread on here about this ( with picture ) showing this .

Make sure you take the batteries out of the camera first , and allow to dry off before reinserting them .

.

Some Sigma lenses were also coated with this rubber stuff and degrade the same way , they can be cleaned the same too .

Well, this clears that up!

Now my other question is: does the alcohol just take away the stickiness, or does it remove the rubbery coating altogether, thus bringing up the metal or plastic surface underneath?

The rubbery coating on the camera back is very very thin , the whole layer degrades causing the stickiness .

Cleaning it with IPA removes it altogether . What remains is the plain , smooth black plastic of the camera back .

Looks nice and smart , the horrible stickiness has gone ( forever !) . Not quite as grippy as original , but not an issue to me .

Earlier cameras didn't have this coating on anyway , so no difference from them .

Cleaned up Dynax 7 . Usable again !

Great! - specificly for that one! My favourite analogue camera

Mine too , smashing piece of kit .

I've had some Rollei Infrared film in one of mine that I've been trying in it .

Need to develop it to see how it's come out .

I usually use it in a Dynax 9 which has a mechanical frame counter , the Dynax 7 uses an infrared device on the sprockets to count the frames . Not sure if this will cause fogging , so trying out a roll anyway .

Can't answer that one yet , not had chance to develop them , nor the other 15 or so rolls of film and plus 5x4 sheet film .

I've been busy doing a load of welding work on my old 1985  VW camper van ready for its MOT .

Giving it it's 20th year rebuild , seems I should have done some of the work a few years ago .

Last rebuilt it 20 years ago , so when I've done it it should be good for another 20 .

Hope so , because I'm not sure I'll be in any fit state to do it again !

.

I'll report back on the results when I get up to date and get them developed .

We're dwelling off topic but what the h...

Nice to read you have a Transporter. Keep up the good work - they are terrific vans!

I drive a 1998 Transporter 2.5 TDI.  It has served me really well all this time, but environment regulations over here are increasingly preventing me from entering city centres, - where more than half of the driving occasions I really have to be (in theatres and music venues). I hate to be forced to sell it, but it's a hopeless case.
It's the best car I have owned in my whole life. Seems unbreakable, just keeps rolling

Re: How to Un-Stick the back of a Minolta Maxxum 7

Now that I have several Maxxum bodies now I have gotten good experience with cleaning either sticky or white stuff off of them. I use 90% IPA. I once tried Goo Gone but it got more messy.

Back years ago Polaroid sold their digicams with a fitted silicone type sleeve. If it remained on the camera, over the years it reacted with the plastic camera body and created a sticky mess worse than the Maxxums! You could almost stick the camera to the wall.
