Re: 5 year old photographer

I gave my 2-year-old son an old Canon D20. I think it's perfect for his age. I don't mind him dropping that camera, it's rated to survive falls within his height. He can also dunk it in water or throw in the mud if he wants and it would still work. It's just full of closeup selfies for now, hopefully he'll figure out how to use it properly.

I don't think I'll give him a DSLR of his own even when he turns 5 but I do let him play with mine with me watching. He's just pressing the buttons and not really taking pictures.

I haven't yet seen any of the 5 year old's images but her father tells me they are amazing. Young eyes, fresh ideas.

That's great; I'm glad to hear the youngster is using the camera.  As I wrote, a lot of it depends on the child and I should add, also the encouragement and help that the younger child may get from an older child or adult.

My sons use my old Niokn D300s and make very good pictures out of them.  People smile when they see kids with big cameras like this.  And they know too how to play and bounce the flash.  They're  very good actually.  Francis is 7 and Phil is 10.
