Re: GX7 vs GX80

I had a GX-7 and now have a GX-85. I read a few of the replies so some of this may sound repetitive.

GX-7

-Better ergonomics (grip, tilting evf)

GX-85

-Great in camera stabilization made even more powerful if you are using a M4/3 lens that has it also (dual mode). It is very impressive when you can handhold the camera using the 100-300mm lens (see further down).

-pictures are sharper in certain situations since they removed the AA filter in the sensor design

-4K photo modes and Post focus mode.

-With either body, lenses are crucial. I have the 12-35mm f2.8, 35-100mm f2.8 and 100-300mm f4. I rented the 100-400 Panaleica zoom and the focus and zoom rings were stiff as mentioned by others so I passed. The 100-300mm is a good lens for the $$.

-I may get some pushback on this one but it's interesting to try. On the 100-300 I've turned on the digital zoom. The 2x setting gives you some decent results, the 4x goes grainy pretty easily..

-Last but not least, why not consider a GX-9. You get back a lot of the GX-7 ergonomics, the 20mp sensor of the G9 and all of the benefits the GX-85 has over the GX-7? Open the DP review GX-9 review and go to the image quality sections and put the GX-9 against the GX-85. You'll se the difference and sharpness in the resolution.

Apparently the GX80 added an EFCS mode too, do you think this is useful over the fully electronic shutter?

No, G85 has EFCS, but not GX85 (GX80).

On G85, according to my home testing, EFCS is very promising but there might be a chance that it is not 100% shutter shock eliminated.

Ah, you're right.

I would use the camera just when I want to get photos without being noticed. Street and documentary mostly.

perhaps you need to look at the Panasonic GF7/9/10(GX800). They are smaller than GX7/80/9, with have e-shutter and tilt screen, and they are certainly very cheap.

I'd still want to have an EVF.

Then, get either GF7 or GX800 as a 3rd body! I have both. With tilting screen and from waist/chest level they are good for streets.

Because I want a small and cheap camera just for limited use cases. For the rest I have other cameras. If money wouldn't be limited for this buy, I'd get an a6300.

GX7 advantages:

-Tilty Evf

- 1/8000 shutter

- flash with master wireless trigger

- better grip

- 12 bits electronic shutter

5 C modes

12 bits e-shutter

Gx80 advantages:

- much better 5 axis IBIS

& DUAL IS

- quieter shutter with greatly reduced shutter shock

- quicker operation, newer processor (but sometimes weird artifacts in jpeg)

- no aa filter ( sharper images)

- charging of the battery through USB

- DFD focusing

- 4k video and 4k photo mode

3 C modes

10 bits e-shutter

Zebra alert

Auto ISO in M but no EC

Dial Operation Switch to add temporary features to front and back dial

4 bracketing modes

Post Focusing

1 stop better high ISO performance

A couple of days ago I bought a very nice used GX7II and I was wondering about the electronic shutter.  12-bit?  10-bit?  Thanks for the info.  I shot quite a bit with it yesterday on my first outing with it and I used the electronic shutter all day.  The same as I normally do with my PEN-F and E-M10II.  I know the situations where I need to switch to the mechanical shutter and I do that only in those situations.  The PEN-F and E-M10II have 12-bit electronic shutters and the scan time is 1/20 second.  Not so fast, but not as slow as some electronic shutters that are more like 1/10 or 1/8 second.  I think the E-M1X is 1/60 and maybe the E-M1III also.  Not sure about the E-M1II and E-M5III.  Does anyone know about the GX7II/GX85?

10 bits in case of GX85.

Not sure why Panny has put a 12 bits e-shutter as well as EFCS up to 1/2000" in G85, a model of similar generation to GX85...

Yes, it is 10-bits. I was replying to the 10-bit info which you and others had already provided. But, what is the scan time I asked about? Do you know?

Re: GX7II/GX85 has 10-bit electronic shutter

I had a bookmark on this, but as that web site had not updated the info (up to GX85 recreationally), I deleted it.

Sorry can't locate the website again by Google.

IIRC the readout speed of GX85 is faster than GX7.

Okay, I was just curious. The faster the readout speed is the less of the jello effect.  It is similar to having a very slow focal plane shutter.  See this interesting 2015 thread:
