GX7 vs GX80

I intend to get one of those two. Is there any reason to prefer one over the other? They look pretty similar to me spec wise.

Thanks!

GX 80 has dual IS and 5 axis IS

it does not have a high pass filter on it.

GX7 advantages:

-Tilty Evf

- 1/8000 shutter

- flash with master wireless trigger

- better grip

- 12 bits electronic shutter

Gx80 advantages:

- much better 5 axis IBIS

- quieter shutter with greatly  reduced shutter shock

- quicker operation, newer processor (but sometimes weird artifacts in jpeg)

- no aa filter ( sharper images)

- charging of the battery through USB

- DFD focusing

- 4k video and 4k photo mode

...

I'd get the Gx80 if I were you. I replaced the gx7 with the Gx80 and the only thing I regret is the better grip, but you can still add one.

Might I say that the evf and integrated flash of both models are the same. Others on the list are true.

Re: GX7 vs GX80 “Mr In-between”

They are certainly a progression but I use my GX7, GX85 and GX9 as a set with no particular attention to which camera get used for what purpose with which lens.

Each camera is a little better than its predecessor but the GX7 was such a great camera when it was first released it is a very hard act to follow.

I doubt if I will ever be out of love with my GX7 and I suspect that I would have been almost as happy with 3 x GX7 cameras as the present ones that I own.

But if it comes to just one camera then why not consider a GX9 instead of the GX80.

The GX80/85 is not as cheap as the classic defining GX7 version and not as good as the more presently competitive GX9.  A sort of “Mr In-between”.

+1.

IMHO GX9 is a major improvement on GX7. But is only marginally for GX85.

If I want to upgrade GX7, GX9 is the best option on feature. However, currently GX7 (if there is still new copy in the market) and GX85 are dirt cheap. As per my shopping yesterday, GX9 is around 30~40% more expansive than GX85... On cost performance, GX85 is still the best buy today.

The same reason I picked G85 instead of G95 (to upgrade GX7) couple of months ago. 😁

Thanks!

I have a GX7 and couldn't bring myself to upgrade to the GX80 because:

  • No tilting EVF.
  • 1080 video didn't look as good as GX7's.
  • No dedicated switch for AF-S/AF-C/MF.

I ended up augmenting my GX7 with a G85 which I suggest you have a look at because its price is very low these days and it has some nice benefits over the GX7 and GX80:

  • Much better IBIS than the GX7 and a bit better (maybe a stop?) than the GX80.
  • Much better EVF.
  • Weather proof.
  • Longer battery life.
  • Better handling/control layout.

I also ended up getting a GX9 recently which is more of an upgrade (with no backward steps...none of my complaints about the GX80 apply to the GX9) to the GX7 than the GX80, IMO.

BUT if it's going to be only between the GX7 and the GX80 then I'd recommend the GX80 simply because the much better IBIS is worth it.  Unless, of course, you like shooting 1080 video in which case I think the GX7 + a lens with OIS is a better choice.

Seeing that you own both, can you kindly give me some answers?

Is the IQ worse in e-shutter mode on GX80/85 vs GX7? I see one uses 12bit and the other 10 bit.

Is a visible difference on dual IS 5 axis stabilization in GX80/85 vs the one in GX7?

But if it comes to just one camera then why not consider a GX9 instead of the GX80.

I ask because I found them at about the same price. I don't want the best possible camera, I want a cheap small camera with tilting screen, e-shutter and touch to focus so I can take a photo without being noticed.

Re: GX7 vs GX80

Thank you for recommendations. Having better features and ergonomics doesn't matter much.

I need a small camera with e-shutter, tilting screen at the lowest price to use when I don't want being noticed.

Would 10 bits with e-shutter on GX80/85 mean worse IQ than 12 bits on GX7? The majority of shooting would be with electronic shutter so that is important to me.

Is it a big difference between dual IS and 5 axis on GX80 vs the IS in GX7? I won't use long lenses, I will use a 17mm or 20mm prime.

If you are not intending to use long lenses, I suggest the difference in IS is irrelevant. I have both cameras: intended to sell the GX7 but find the toggle switch between af and mf too valuable to lose. I can't say the 10 bit vs 12 bit difference has ever made the slightest impact.

if stabilisation is not very important for your photography (which is...?), perhaps you need to look at the Panasonic GF7/9/10(GX800). They are smaller than GX7/80/9, with have e-shutter and tilt screen, and they are certainly very cheap.

In the same price range as the GX7/GX80, you could also look at the Olympus E-M10 Mark ll, which offers similar feature set.

I would use the camera just when I want to get photos without being noticed. Street and documentary mostly.

I'd still want to have an EVF.

Yes, but it is bigger.

Yes, but you would only notice when pushing the raw files or if you use icontrast to boost the shadows. You'll get more noise from the 10 bits files. It's noticeable.

Yes. I'd say you can get about 1 or 2 stops gain from gx7 ibis, and about 3 to 4 from GX80. To me this is a big difference.

E-Shutter

Have you noticed a difference in the way e-shutter works? What's the max e-shutter speed on the GX7?

Might be worth mentioning that the GX80 apparently has a quieter shutter, is that useful?

Reading replies here and some reviews, it seems that GX85 is the better camera, apart from that 10 bit with electronic shutter.

I wonder what that means. The camera captures full data and discards part of it when writing the raw file or it just captures 10 bit data?

I hope it doesn't mean more noise beside reduced DR. I can live with reduced DR but I don't like more noise.

The popup flash mechanisms differ a bit, but the review of the GX85 here on DPR does say that it can be directed at the ceiling, so you are apparently correct on that.

The EVF panels may be identical, but several here have written that they find a difference in EVF use between the two cameras, with the EVF of the GX85 less pleasant to use, perhaps because of poorer optics in front of the EVF panel.  I haven't used a GX85 so I can't say, but the comment has been made here by folks who usually seem to be discerning and careful.

For your intended uses, one advantage of the GX9 over the GX80/85 is the 12-bit e-shutter. You may (or may not) also find the tilting viewfinder (in addition to the tilting screen) useful - using it can give you a bit less of the "staring straight at you" look, compared to a traditional viewfinder. The GX7 also has the tilting viewfinder.

In the UK at least, the current difference between the GX80/85 and the GX9 is about £150. I'm not sure whether this puts it outside the amount you're willing to spend.
