SX110 IS

I found a Canon SX110 IS at a thrift store yesterday and picked it up for just $6.00.  Condition is almost like new with not a mark on the LCD screen.  Only "issue" is that the battery for the internal memory is expired so it doesn't remember the date/time settings.

I haven't been out with it yet  but, from the following shot, it's a very promising walk-around camera.

Now that's a deal!  My wife has the S100 which has been mostly used as a take along on trips.  Very non-intrusive.  It is especially good with close ups.  Very limited on zoom range which I find somewhat limiting.  The serial # is in the "possible lens problem" list  but so far, lucky.

These Canon P&S cameras are subject to white blow out so -1/3 to -2/3 EC helps a lot,  Some editing is usually required.  A good pocket type camera for sure.

Thanks for the "white blow out" advice.  I'll watch out for that.

Meanwhile, I bought a new CR1220 battery for the clock memory and some rechargeable AA batteries, so my new toy is now fully functional.  Took this indoor shot using the flash and I'm pretty impressed by how well it turned out for detail and colour.

I found a usb cable for my new/old camera so did a bit of experimenting with downloading through the cable instead of removing the card each time.  Works well once the camera software downloaded.

I continue to be impressed with what this little camera will do.  This one taken in P mode set with vivid colour and with flash then cropped to get it as a close-up.

Re: SX110 IS

How do we locate three thrift stores. I would like to check if there are any lens for sale. Are these places safe to visit.

Thanks

I guess it depends where you live. Here in southern Ontario our cities usually have a number of thrift stores (called charity shops in the UK). The larger ones are Value Village, Goodwill and the Salvation Army and I have never had any concerns about safety.

I also lived in Tokyo for a number of years (2001-06) and the second hand (junk) stores there were great.  I was still shooting film in those days and I picked up some wonderful cameras and lenses there.

As for lenses, things seem to have changed over the last 2 - 3 yrs. I have picked up some excellent lenses at Value Village but, these days, I rarely see much on offer. My best purchase was a Konica Hexanon AR 35/2.0 lens for about $16. Cosmetically, it was pretty dirty but, once I had cleaned it up, the optics are fine and they can sell for around $300 on line.

Many thanks!

The poor old dog gets a bit over worked as a subject, especially if I am experimenting with something new............ mostly because all other members of my family are very reluctant models.

As for the camera, I'm so happy to have found it and I am still surprised every time I use it.  For reasons of size alone, it will now be the camera of choice whenever I go on business trips  and I don't think that it will disappoint me compared to the hefty equipment that I usually take along.
