Yongnuo YN24EX and Canon 90D

Hi

I've recently purchased the YN24EX for my Canon90D but am finding that the shots are all coming out underexposed but 2 or so stops. Have tried lots of different settings but cannot get it to work as I had hoped. Anyone else got this combination working satisfactorily? Seems to work fine with my older 60D

Thanks

Mark

Re: Yongnuo YN24EX and Canon 90D

I have exactly the same problem with my YN14EX ring flash and my 90D. I have posted on several forums but there is no solution yet. I have tried all kinds of different settings on the camera and the flash to no avail.

The flash works fine on my Canon 550D and 760D. On my Canon 90D in manual mode it gives me about 3-4 stops of underexposure at iso 100. The other problem is that the ETTL will not automatically compensate for the changing iso. So using iso 200 increases exposure 1 stop, iso 400 - 2 stops etc. In theory, setting the iso to 800 would compensate for the 3 stops of underexposure but that would give me a lot of grain. I prefer to shoot macro shots at iso 100.

All I can do is run a test exposure with ETTL and dial in 3 stops of exposure compensation on the flash (or in the camera) which is very annoying. If I need 4 stops more exposure I would need to dial 3 stops on the flash and change from iso 100 to 200 to gain an extra stop. By that time, the subject may have disappeared. It's also possible to use manual flash power on the YN14EX ring flash but that is also trial and error.

I know the short answer may be that this flash is just not compatible with the 90D and I will have to live with it. I have no idea what the difference is in the firmware that makes the 90D handle flash differently compared to earlier Canon models. It's highly unlikely that Canon will update their firmware to accommodate non-Canon flash units. Even if  Yongnuo updated their firmware on future models there is no way the end user can update the firmware chip on an old flash.

I do hope that someone will come up with a solution or a hack but I am not holding my breath.

Kind regards

Chris
