What does HD mean on a 45-150 Lumix zoom?

I have a 45-150mm f/4-5.6 zoom that came originally with my GX7. On the barrel it is designated as 'HD'. Back in the day, DPReview carried a news item announcing that various lenses had been upgraded to HD status. This was one of them.

When I look at this lens as currently offered new (e.g. at B&H), there is no HD marking.

What does HD mean? Does it make any difference? Is the fact that it seems to have disappeared of any significance?

As I recall, this was just a marketing fad that arose with HD TV. Manufacturers tripped all over themselves to stick the HD designation on everything. It was doubly silly for cameras because HD resolution is 720p or 1080p, and they exceeded that in what, 2001? The lens was never really a limiting factor, but none had HD video until much later.

For marketing mostly... HD, was once a selling point to some people not familiar with gear, and the standard had long been superseded by UHD or 4K...

Nothing related to IQ. Having the printing on the lens (including 14~140 f/3.5~5.6, 12~35 f/2.8 or 45~175 PZ etc) indeed just suggested its age 😥. All later models have HD been erased.

It has HD marking, but on the opposite side of the barrel.
lens is small, sharp wide open at 150mm, but has significant vignetting, this is all I need to know %)

It is not the best lens of its class, e.g. 14~140 is a step better, but I never have vignetting issue nor CA on Panny bodies. It is a lens of reasonable IQ in its price tag <US$130.

What is the body that you have such problem?

It is not the dark corners issue, but sides are darker then the center of the image by ~1EV

Panasonic introduced "HD" marking for lens that were video-optimized:

"Specifically these HD lenses excel in tracking focus in video recording while offering silent auto focus and exposure control. In addition, there is enhanced stability of O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) in video recording."

I think 14-140mm zoom was one of the first. Some of the other lens were deemed "HD" after firmware updates to handle video abovementioned video features better. At some point in time video became one of standard lens features and marking was not continued.

Not very good as per your posted sample.

According to the review of this lens by Opotcallimits, it seems that the vignetting should not be so bad (except wide open @45mm and @150mm):

I rarely shoot for the sky to look for the vignetting as you did, but on my general experience on this lens vignetting is not really noticeable, or at least so bad that to my worrying.

The following is a day to day SOOC jpg snapshot when I test the newly purchased G85:

The result is quite consistent on GX7 (which was my main camera and had 45-150 on it for last 5 years)... A few SOOC jpg on GX7 from my last trip to the Holy Land:

Wedding Church of Kafr Kanna

Wedding Church

Church of the Primacy of St Peter

Caesarea

I suppose you might agree that these should not have really vignetting issue.

Did your images were converted from RAW by a non G80 supported RAW converter? Or if SOOC jpg, had you disabled the "Shading Comp" in REC Menu?

You might have a naughty lens... 🤗 Sometimes it is very happy to do well but sometimes not...

Happy shooting.
