Thanks to all for your answers!

I took the camera to a trip to Moscow mainly to shoot my grandson indoors.

When upon my return I checked the results I was shocked - none (none!!!) was more ore less decent.

All of them were shot with ISO settings up to 1600 and due to light conditions mostly at 1600. So, they were very soft and slightly out of focus.
I was lucky to be within BestBuy return period and the camera went back.

Not my cup of tea

Hard to know what to make of this since many people seem to have gotten excellent results with this camera.

Sorry...I'm not a troll, I have owned the G7X II for a couple of years but when I tried the G5X Mark II I was disappointed. Got the Sony and realized just how much better the focus and sharpness is.

Maybe the discrepancy in results is due to sample variation.

I bought the G5X MII from Best Buy. Took it back after 3 days...SOFT SOFT SOFT. Bought the Sony and I'm very happy. SHARP SHARP SHARP...My G7X MII was better than the G5X II...To bad the handling and touch screen is nice...

Some weeks ago I returned a brand new Sony RX100 VI because of SOFT SOFT SOFT

Yep, I don't think many people deliberately troll cameras. I think most have legitimate experiences with cameras that forms their opinions. In my case, the G5X MkII has performed very well. My favorite crop-factor camera is a Leica CL digital. It produces fantastic images for an APS-C sensor and is very compact. So that's my compact camera benchmark. The G5X is clearly not as good - dynamic range is not as good and noise levels are higher. However, in the sharpness category the G5X does a little better. So I'd chalk up the differences with different users as sample variation. My eyes are pretty much as good as anyone else's, so I can tell the differences in images as well as the next guy (in some cases I'm more critical - it's the engineer in me). One thing I noted earlier in the post is that you can be in macro mode and not know it and get crummy images at distance. Some of the criticisms may come from that. But others likely not. So the moral of the story I think is to be sure you have a good copy. Mine happens to be good and as good as the Sony RX's I've had (wouldn't say better except in the ergonomics area). Anyway, good discussion.

Early in this thread the OP suggested carrying around the G5Xii with the electronic view finder extended, to avoid having to repeat the EVF's two-step operation. This works because the lens does not zoom out when the view finder is turned on. Perhaps the Sony RX 100s have evolved in this regard, but on my RX100iii, the lens zooms out whenever the view finder is turned on. I like not having the lens zoom out in the G5Xii -- seems like an improvement.
