Canon T6

Trying to surprise my girlfriend with new camera or a new lens. She has the Canon T6 with the kit lens, a Telephoto Sigma 75-200 and a Canon 10-18 wide angle.

Was wondering whether to get her another lens or a new body. I see that most of the forums or reviews suggest the Canon EOS 80D. I know ow she would like to take more moving pics of motocross racing as well and auto racing.

Please help a Noobie and  boyfriend 😁

While not as full-featured as an 80D, the T6 is plenty capable of producing great photos. If those are the only 2 lenses she has then there's a gaping hole to fill in the wide-normal focal lengths that are most used.

Usual suspects (depending on budget) are:

EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM - small, light, and inexpensive, but with good optical performance.

EF-S 15-85 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM - wider range for less lens swapping, great optics (was my choice)

EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM - more expensive, but wider f/2.8 max. aperture throughout the zoom range.

IMHO, YMMV

Re: Canon T6

Which one of those choices would be best for motocross and moving pictures or is that what the camera does. I have no idea about how the camera and lenses work.

I think maybe she has the 18-55 but not sure. Is that the lens that would have came with the camera?

Thanks

Picking out photographic equipment for someone else is next to impossible since there are so many factors.

For example last fall I was looking for a new camera and the 80D was one of the cameras I was considering but I decided on a different model because it was lighter than the 80D and that was important to me.

I would suggest just letting her know your budget and let her pick out what she wants.

That might not seem as romantic as surprising her with something but you if you approach it could work out well because it could be seen as a sign of respect for her opinions and that you want to have open communications with her.

Just FYI Canon has sells discounted refurbished equipment on their web side that comes with a Canon one year warranty. I have bought several things there and it has always looked like new and I never had any problems with the equipment I have gotten there.

Re: Canon T6

I hate it when someone tries to second guess what expensive specialist equipment I would like.  The end result is that I end up with something that I didn't really want but have to keep because it was a "special" gift.  So unless the GF has dropped some very strong hints about what she would like do her a favour, take her shopping and let her choose.

While I also have the T6, and indeed takes great photos, I don't think is the most capable for fast mooving objects. Autofocus and burst shoot aren't it's greatest features. I would think about another body, and a refurbished 80D would, in this case, make more sense.

I rarely recommend anyone buying Canon’s budget T6 or T7 cameras because I feel they are missing too many important features:

1) NO infrared wireless remote

2) NO touchscreen LCD screen

3) NO articulating LCD screen

4) NO self cleaning sensor

5) NO external microphone jack

6) NO center contact on flash hot shoe (T7)

7) NO speaker for video playback

8) NO continuous AF in video mode

Additionally, the T6 and T7 are often bundled with the EF-S 18-55 III which has NO Image Stabilization.

When all these missing features are added up I feel it easily justifies the extra cost of the T6i or T7i.
