Custom hand grip for M100

I found the M100 to be difficult to grip even with my small hands, so I made a custom hand grip for it.

Although my system is the M6 I find it difficult also. My thoughts on this was to purchase a camera cage that allows for multiple mounting of grips. One thing that has help time the cage is purchased, is how I've shortened the neck strap and used it as a wrist band to support the camera.

This one was very inexpensive to make and took less than an hour. It is perfectly fitted to my hand in a position with my finger on the shutter button. I do like the idea of having a hand strap as well.

There are several hand or wrist straps on the market, some look very secure while others you should avoid. I found it simpler just to shorten the neck strap as I said, but install a cinch in the middle of the strap. This small cinch is nothing more than a buckle on the strap for a tight spot. Slide you hand/wrist into that buckle spot and hold the camera by the lens. been working for me for 1 year. I can't say it comfortable, but does the job for the time being.

Cover the front of the camera with cellophane tape.

Cut a piece of extreme mounting tape smaller than the final grip size and apply to the camera.

Mix up some hand moldable epoxy and press it over the mounting tape.

Grip the epoxy with your hand while holding your finger on the shutter button.

Let the epoxy harden, remove it from the camera and remove the mounting tape from the back.

Sand it down to desired size and shape and paint with several coats of Plastidip.

Reapply some mounting tape and attach it to the camera.

Wow never thought of using epoxy to form a grip, I thought it was 3D printed.

Thanks for sharing, bro.

Nice solution but too much work.

Canon makes a "face jacket" for $20ish that works great and fits like a glove.

I thought I would hate it but the plastic has a nice texture that makes the M much easier to hold.

The blue one looks pretty to me.

It only took an hour to make it and cost a few dollars. I already had the Plastidip spray.

I do like the look of the Canon grip. I guess you have to remove it to change the battery.

Re: Custom hand grip for M100

I picked up the blue "face jacket" from Canon (on sale for $20 last week) https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/camera-face-jacket-eh-fj-border-yellow

It fits and looks as nice as I expected. The big, pleasant surprise is that it's made of a grippy, textured plastic. I put off buying this thing for a while because I expected a smooth surface. This makes the camera much more pleasant to hold. As a stills-only shooter it gives me one less reason to upgrade (if only I could buy a couple of additional dials for the M100!).

Not terribly easy to spot here, but if you look closely you can see the textured, grippy bumps.

I was considering a silicone cover but I'm concerned what the cover would interfere with the tripod mount. Does this cover/case allow for ease of tripod mounting?

No, it has to be removed to mount a tripod or change the battery. It allows access to everything else – side ports, buttons, and SD card.

It has a shallow tripod mount screw, so it comes off and on quickly. It's also small when not mounted on the camera. So unless you're switching from handheld to tripod many times a day I wouldn't rule this out on that basis.

I knew about this getting my "face jacket"

I got it anyway because:

It comes off really easily, just a couple of turns of the big thumb screw.  You do this all the time for replacing the battery.

I don't really need a grip if the camera is on a tripod or monopod.

I think the facejacket works with the M200 so that's one more reason to upgrade.
How do you like the EF-S 24mm F2.8 on your M100?   I was surprised to see that combo but I'm considering it myself.
Thanks!

I feel pretty mixed on the EF-S 24mm. I bought it over the native 22mm lens to save money since I already had the adapter ($99 new on sale vs. about $160 used or $200 new for the 22mm). If I could do it again I would probably just shell out for the native lens, but it's not so large that it ever stops me from taking my camera out. It's more like an aesthetic annoyance.

On the more substantial end, the extra aperture stop on the 22mm would be welcome from time to time in doors. So if you're looking between the EF-S 24mm and the EF-M 22mm I'd go with the native lens unless money is an issue, in which case the EF-S lens is really fine.
