G5X II: Is rattling from the lens cover normal?

When I move the camera and especially if I shake it I hear a loud rattle that I figured out was coming from the lens cover. For comparison I took my Sony RX100 III and shook it and could barely hear anything.

If the camera is defective I'd like to know right away so I can return it

I hear a sound when I shake mine, but I'm not convinced it's the lens cover. If I hold a finger across the blades, I still hear the same sound. If I turn the camera on, I hear a slightly modified sound. Perhaps it's the spring-loaded blades of the aperture or something similar. I hope it's not a problem waiting to happen.

With mine if I hold my the blades of the cover still I don't hear any rattle. Maybe I should I take a video and post it.

I've got that rattle too and it stops when holding the blades. The blades seem thicker than others of a similar type so perhaps this is the reason? Bit annoying but I'm assuming it's fine. Having said that, it doesn't fill me with confidence about the build quality!

Mine rattles too... but it doesn't seem to affect the operation of the camera. Just took it on a trip and it was working perfectly fine. Saw from other forums that this seems to be somewhat of a norm for Canon compacts? Didn't have this problem when I had the Rx100... it's a bit annoying but I assume it's the way the camera is built.

It's definitely annoying, but I'm glad it's not a defect. I really like the IQ and other aspects of the ergonomics, but it's annoying to hear that rattle every time I pick up the camera or when the shutter closes.

I don't know if the G5X II is the same as G3X when it comes to the Image Stabilization system, but when the G3X is turned off, the IS system creates a rattling when you shake the camera a bit. But the rattling goes away when the camera is turned on. With the G3X this is perfectly normal. Perhaps the G5X II is the same. If not, I have no idea if it is normal or not.

In some Pentax bodies and Sigma lenses (and maybe other products I don’t know about) the stabilised components can move around when the camera isn’t powered up. In those cases, it’s perfectly normal. Could this be the case with your camera? Sounds like it.

Mine is the same

Sounds about the same as yours. My Sony AX53 camcorder has the same kind of lens cover. Almost exactly. It had a similar rattle from it if you shook it.

After I dropped the Sony in the sand the lens opened and stayed that way. Apparently a grain of sand wedged in between those blades and I couldn't shake it loose. Bought a 55mm lens cover and it's been fine with that. Been using it that way for a year and a half. Moral of the story, don't drop it in the sand. lol

Re: G5X II: Is rattling from the lens cover normal?

Glad I found this thread!  I just for a G5xii, and the lens cover rattles, too.  My Sony RX100 doesn't do this, but my Panasonic compact does (slightly).  Did anyone ever run into any problems due to this, or is it no biggie.  It does annoy me that a $900 camera rattles, but I guess as long as it takes nice shots, that's what matters.

Just joining in to say mine rattles too.  They probably just have slightly weaker springs keeping the lens cover leafs closed.  Or same springs and heavier leafs. Leaves?
