Just got the Canon RF24-70 2.8 IS|first look, feel and macro test
6

Finally, it's there, the Canon RF 24 70 2.8 IS. I am lucky to be one of the first with this lens I guess? Couldn't find anything relevant on google about it.
First things first, I'm a hybrid professional shooter, so video and photography is equally important. First I used a Tamron 24 70 g2, but couldn't trust that one always. So yes, to invest my earnings, I had to buy this one. I'm not a professional reviewer, so I don't were to look ;),

I will report the following interesting info:

- The lens is totally silent, only if you put your ear on it, you hear the internals wirring. you also don't hear the focussing.

- lens hood included as you see

- A little bit front heavy

-Sturdy zoom, but smooth handling. Importantly, it doesn't creep, even with a lot of trying.

-Its rainy, so didn't test it outside jet, Did some testing with harsher light, so a little bit of iso's.

- Stabilization works nice, especially with the digital IS you really see the system work together

- No focuscreep as advertised

- Extra expensive in the Netherlands, a whopping 2540 euro. I asked the guy behind the counter what the price will do. He said, the purchase price is already super high, so he didn't expect that that price will do something for a while. His store actually doesn't earn on this lens that much. Earnings come from other stuff, more cheap products.

- Asked him what system is best. It depends, he said Nikon is struggling. Their camera system is super nice, but also expensive. Canon did a good job there with its RP. Sony is nice, but not for professionals regarding service. (we know)

- I'm just going to use this lens, next Thursday I got already a big gig where I do video and photography, so that will be nice test.

For your info, I work 40 hours as a legal adviser. Since 2 years I'm trying to live my dream, trying to built a business around photography and videography. This is my first real real lens investment (next to the 70200 2.8 ii and 1635 f4 which got me in the pro game). I hope this lens will serve me well coming years.

Lens pictures are made with the Iphone11pro Portret mode on 50 mm. This phone is crazy epic (switched from android) It's another world regarding usability and User Experience, and I'm quite a critic.

Macro as in, focus distance is 21 cm between the 24 and 35mm focuslength. That is similar as the 35 1.8 stm with its macro feature. I know it is not real macro, but its a nice tool and prevents switching lenses.

bought the lens at calumetphoto in Rotterdam.

congrats !!

any flesh around the "nikon struggling" quote ?

RP is popular in Japan and US, not sure about Europe as its too close to the Z6 in price which is far superior

I have seen alot of professionals using the A7/9 series. In fact possibly the majority recently. The market that Sony hasn't cracked yet is the 1D / 6D market for sports. Alot of this is down to lenses. I think the A9ii will close the gap but lets see

For amateurs (like me), I always look at glass first and bodies second. Canon already has some lovely inspirational glass, and the 15-30 and the 24-70 2.8 look great.

I would like a 28 and 35mm f1.4 and then a range of lighter/lower cost f2 and f1.8s

The jury is still out, but the Canon EOS-R as a package is very tempting

Enjoy your lens, and post some pictures ...

+ Can I see a picture of it on your camera

Yes regarding the Nikon story, he mentioned the fact that the whole camera business is struggling, and Nikon only does cameras. Canon can catch a part with their printers. That whole store received 2 lenses, en 2 other lenses where ordered. We at dpreview are a happy few super interested in gear, but I don't think al enthusiast think like that.
Thanks for your reply :D, I did some quick snaps, jpg, high iso's, little dark in here, maybe extra interesting what the sharpness does with the high iso's. Also one picture show the space for your fingers between the lens. Quite plenty.

Can you share a little about your experience with Tamron 24-70 G2 adapted on the EOS R?

I'm on the fence now about going with Tamron 24-70 G2 or Canon RF 24-105 (my budget is $1000) so I'm kinda confused on what to get and it's hard to find a real user review of the Tamron on a EOS R/RP camera.

Especially autofocus speed and accuracy.

Thanks

I can imagine!

I've been doing a wedding last weekend with it on the Eos R, it did fine. Autofocus works ok, accuracy also, but with moving subjects it is harder. It can hunt a little bit and cannot keep up alway. The 2.8 has nice bokeh though. Right now the new RF 24 70 doesn't feel that different. Only this is that my lens at 2.8 was soft. I just don't want a soft lens anymore, so I bit the bullet for the RF, I just want to trust my lens and the quality.

If you're a professional I would recommend the rf 24 105. I think that lens is more fun, thinking of weight and such. I shot a wedding with the Tamron 24 70 on my canon 5d mark iv, https://vimeo.com/356900904 , trailer, it did really well.

Re: Just got the Canon RF24-70 2.8 IS|first look, feel and macro test

I'm a part time professional, work on marketing but do portraits and occasional events (intimate weddings) and street photography.

I'd like to say it's a self sustained hobby

But I do only stills for anything serious, still haven't got around to learning to shoot video although it's an interest of mine.

LOVED your video, the edit was really fun and the behind the scenes footage of the weeding are adorable. Congrats! Liked the image quality as well, the sharpness for video seems good. Do you have stills I could see?

Also, I had the same erratic behavior on the 50mm 1.8 STM before the firmware update. It seems more trustworthy now!

Thanks!

Nice!!! A little bit the same league then :), earning the lenses with the photography. My business gets bigger everyday, because I see a lot of people wanting the combination of photo and video. I try to be pro on both sides (like here https://orchidinspirationdays.com/impressie/ ) . Regarding video: I learned it by making video's for friends of vacations. Those people are the hardest people to entertain, so I had to keep making interesting en fun videos. I took that practice to the wedding and business market, and it works. My pro tip: Don't use frames longer than 3 seconds, make it quick, vary in different shots and details. And just practice.

For weddings, I really hate the crybaby wedding movies of those people doing there vows etc in the background, cheesy music etc.. There is so much fun potential in wedding movies, but everyone does the same thing and it is boring.

Test in during event

As promised, real life use of the RF 24 70.  Not my best pictures :p, bad light, too lazy to align all pictures with the same wb vibe. But it does the trick. Video I did there, came out very nice. There is some sharpning in post. But you get the idea of the bokeh, let me know what you think!

Re: Test in during event

Why are they downsized?

I can see the doughnut bokeh in one of them, which is also a problem with the EF version...
