Re: What's your Holy Trio? Primes.

I seldom have use for anything under 25mm, so mine is:

1. Panny/Leica 25mm 1.4: I consider this a must have in M43. I also have the awesome Voigtlander 25mm/0.95 but its use case is far more narrow. The panny 25mm/1.4 is my carry along lens. Beautiful and does many things very well.

2. Voigtlander 42.5/0.95: a dreamy awesome lens. Love shooting with it all manually. Just don't get wrapped up in shooting at 0.95 because you can. I wanted to love the Oly 75/1.8 but it's too limited due to minimum distance and focal length. Awesome when you can use it. There's also the 45/18 Oly, but the Voigt is so much better, although I also like the 45/1.8 a lot, the aforementioned Panny 25/1.4 can do everything the 45/1.8 can do better, and the Voigt is just waaaay more artsy.

3. Panasonic 100-300mm: this is the stuff that makes m43. A 600mm equivalent you can carry along and shoot with one hand. Phenomenal price/performance.

Some other special mentions:

a. An old, old Oly OM 135/2.8 manual with m43 adapter. I so wish they made a native m43 equivalent. It's a fantastic lens for shooting hummingbirds if you bring patience and old fashined virtues (autofocus is a non-no in hummingbird photography IMHO, the fun is in anticipation)

b. A 43 lens, the Oly 50/2.0 with adapter. Awful slow autofocus, go manual - but beautiful results and a fav.

The Voigtländer 42.5mm is my favorite lens! I don't go crazy shooting at f0.95, but I'm always happy to have it when I want it!

For 75mm, give the new Voigtländer Nokton 75mm f1.5 a try. It focuses at .7m (27.5"). I have the 75mm f2.5 Color Heliar, but was always wanting a bit wider aperture for night shooting and it's minimum focus distance is over a meter. The 75mm f1.5 does it!

It's an excellent lens! Beautiful rendering. 12 aperture blades make for some crazy starbursts, too! The only downside is a fairly short focus throw, so it's a bit tricky to nail focus at first. After a little practice it's fine.

I have that lens, too. My copy isn't great. Low contrast, with a slightly veiled quality.

Anyone else carry a small holy trio when possible, old school? For example, 3 primes for a full trip or to hit the streets for some photography trips? I noticed here that this forum loves the 7.5mm LAOWA.

I suspect that this is in part due to the fact that the otherwise very complete micro 4/3 lens line up does not feature a UWA lens with AF like a 2.8/9mm or 10mm

there is a market for a compact 2.8 or 3.5/10mm with AF , weather sealing and a thread for filters

There are the 8mm FE lenses.

But a 9mm AF prime that takes filters would be great.

Yes but fisheye lenses are very specific tools . This is why they need an af rectilinear lens

You’re kinda part way there with EM1-2 or X de-fish mode and the 8mm 1.8 FE Pro. My lens is being delivered tomorrow so I haven’t played with it yet.

As I said above (https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/63133246), the 8mm f1.8 FE would be on my list, with defishing options (or not).

In fact, I do have that lens now, and when traveling always take that plus the 12-100mm f/4 and the PL 8-18mm with me.  And sometimes the 17mm f/1.8, though I’m saving up for the 17mm f/1.2.

IMO it is quite relevant.

Without post-processing, an FE is a niche lens. But with post processing, it can be used as a rectilinear lens (or something in-between), albeit with some compromise to across-frame IQ.

The Olympus 8mm f/1.8 FE PRO starts out as an exceptional FE lens, but even more usefully on an EM1ii you can select defished modes which display a rectilinear image in real time in the EVF or FAS.

I do agree with you that it would be great to have an automatic UWA rectilinear lens in the system, but I am pointing out what I consider to be a viable alternative (for the present).

It is a beautiful little lens! I bought mine before the EM1ii firmware update which enabled the in-camera defish function, and so was very pleasantly surprised when that function was announced.

I think that for the most critical image defishing with some external programs from the RAW file can be both more flexible and at a higher level of IQ.

The beauty of the EM1ii’s internal defishing mode is that the real-time defished preview is a huge help in framing your scene, and then if you think you can improve on the in-camera defished JPEG you still also have the original full resolution FE RAW file to work with on your computer. (If shooting RAW+JPEG).

Seems like everybody's favorite primes are pretty wide angle and mid range, no one mentions telephotos.

You've a 200 Panny and a 300 Oly. That's it unless you're using Viltrox etc.
I've the 300 Oly and have both TCons. The 300 is really sharp and great for birds and insects but I'd rather a 150mm f1.4!

That’s what appeals to me, the real time defished preview plus the option to work with the Raw afterwards (yes I shoot Raw plus jpeg), plus of course being able to shoot a native fisheye image in the first place. A kind of two for one. I can’t seem to find a bad word said about this lens and I’m really looking forward to seeing what it can do.

I noticed here that this forum loves the 7.5mm LAOWA. I was looking at my carry, and the only time I read the term holy trinity of lenses here, it was the first three pro zooms from Olympus. I would love to read about options for the prime shooters out there? I come from a Contax and Leica M background, so the primes are something that brings me joy to use. I am still excited because my old carry was significantly lightened up from my old film days.

My film to digital transformation... getting back to the old days. There were stops between..., but this is where I ended up. I am extremely happy.

  • Contax G2 605g to Olympus E-M1 497g
  • Contax G Zeiss Biogon 21mm f/2.8 180g to Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12mm f2 130g
  • Contax G Zeiss Planar 35mm f/2 150g to Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f1.8 120g
  • Contax G Zeiss Sonnar 90mm f/2.8 190g to Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 45mm f1.8 116g
  • Total Weight 1125g to Total Weight 863g

So my holy trinity of lenses is obviously:

  • Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12mm f2
  • Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f1.8
  • Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 45mm f1.8

What's your prime trio for ... whatever?

My basic quad for low light corporate event work has been:

  • Oly 12/2
  • Pan 20/1.7
  • Oly 45/1.8
  • Oly 75/1.8

Lately, though, I'm using the 12/2 on a GX9 and a 35/1.4 and 85/1.8 on Sony a7III & a7RIII. The a7RIII's crop mode turns the 35 into a 50 and the 85 into a 130. I still have my GX8 standing by with 12-35/2.8 for decent ambient light and/or flash shots.

Too funny.
