What's your Holy Trio? Primes.
1

Anyone else carry a small holy trio when possible, old school? For example, 3 primes for a full trip or to hit the streets for some photography trips? I noticed here that this forum loves the 7.5mm LAOWA. I was looking at my carry, and the only time I read the term holy trinity of lenses here, it was the first three pro zooms from Olympus. I would love to read about options for the prime shooters out there? I come from a Contax and Leica M background, so the primes are something that brings me joy to use. I am still excited because my old carry was significantly lightened up from my old film days.

My film to digital transformation... getting back to the old days.  There were stops between..., but this is where I ended up.  I am extremely happy.

  • Contax G2 605g to Olympus E-M1 497g
  • Contax G Zeiss Biogon 21mm f/2.8 180g to Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12mm f2 130g
  • Contax G Zeiss Planar 35mm f/2 150g to Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f1.8 120g
  • Contax G Zeiss Sonnar 90mm f/2.8 190g to Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 45mm f1.8 116g
  • Total Weight 1125g to Total Weight 863g

So my holy trinity of lenses is obviously:

  • Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12mm f2
  • Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f1.8
  • Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 45mm f1.8

What's your prime trio for ... whatever?

Still have my Contax G gear, even if it's gathering dust. Those lenses, just amazing even if the 21 and 16 are hampered by the "bonus" viewfinder. The 45/2.0 Planar is worth adapting to m4/3, but I haven't found an adapter that fits on E-M1s because the faux pentaprism front overhang doesn't clear. The 90 Sonnar also adapts nicely but requires quite a bit of CA cleanup.

Guess if you made me pick just three I'd go 12/2, 17/1.2 and 75/1.8. I also have 25/1.8, 20/1.7 and 45/1.8 but they don't "spark joy" like the other three.

My dark horses are the 4/3 150/2.0 and 300/4 Pro. Hey, they're primes! Just not light, but each wins a Best in Show ribbon.

Cheers,

Rick

Pl 15mm F/1.7, Olympus 45mm 1.8 and my next lens would be the Loawa 7.5 which I still don't have . All compact fast and sharp.

My holy duo so far is

17mm 1.2 Pro

45mm 1.2 Pro

To complete my prime trinity I’m currently pondering the 8mm 1.8 FE Pro vs the Laowa 7.5mm 2.0

The rest are zooms which are good enough for me.

The new in-camera defish makes me consider the 8mm as well.  Of course, I would also need to upgrade the camera... which could happen lol.

I don't do landscape much so my trio set up is 17mm f1.2, 45mm f1.2 and 75mm f1.8.

I might be adding PL 25mm f1.4 II later but still believe that still would't change my holy trio primes setup.

Cheers

I only have a trinity on my APS-C + Speedbooster pseudo-FF kit: Olympus OM 24mm f/2.8, 50mm f/3.5 macro, and 135mm f/2.8.

The SLR Magic 8mm f/4 is my only MFT prime. The Olympus 40-150 f/4.0-5.6 might as well be a prime for how sharp and tiny and handy it is.

Voigtländer 42.5mm f0.95

Voigtländer 75mm f1.5 (adapted, M mount)

Although, I have other sets of lenses I like, too.

Transformation from miniature film to μ4/3
2

If someone held a gun to my head and said I had to dump my (mostly) preferred zooms and instead choose only 3 primes, then I would first reflect on my 35mm film kit which greatly satisfied me for a decade, starting in 1973, 2x Asahi Pentax Spotmatic II bodies with:

1. SMC Takumar 35mm f/2

2. SMC Takumar 85mm f/1.8

3. SMC Takumar 20mm f/3.5

For μ4/3 today, I would want to have some of the highest quality lenses in the line and I would forego any longer telephoto, so it would be (with my EM1ii bodies):

1. M.Zuiko 17mm f/1.2

2. M.Zuiko 45mm f/1.2

3. M.Zuiko 8mm f/1.8 FE (with de-fish options)

(But I would still somehow keep my contraband zooms for an occasional fix.)

I'm so new to MFT that I don't have any primes yet but my old Canon kit would be the  nifty 50 f1.8, the 135 f2.0 and the 300 f4.
