Firmware update on D7100?

Hi folks,

I just rec'd my new used D7100 today and see that the firmware has never been updated. I took a quick look at the changes listed on Nikon's download site and don't really see anything that would affect my use of the camera.

I'm a little nervous about updating.  Is there any overwhelming reason to do it/not do it?

Thanks for your help on this!

I updated mine (same as you, bought used and with original firmware) because I wanted to be able to use the new AF-P lenses with a little more functionality.  The upload itself was painless enough, but I doubt I would have done it if it wasn't for the AF-P compatibility thing.

The Nikon firmware pages are very good about saying what they do, if you don't see anything that you want to do, leave well alone.

Thanks for your reply. I think I will indeed leave well enough alone for now, at least until I am more familiar with the camera and can justify messing with it. Thanks again!

No need to update unless you're using the new AF-P lenses.

In my opinion though you should consider going AF-P with future lens purchases, upgrading your 18-55 for example, or adding a 70-300 for longer reach.

If you're squeamish about installing the firmware, any shop can do it for you.  But it's really easy to do yourself.

Thanks for your reply.

Do you know if those kit lenses I have perform poorly on the D7100 vs. the D90? Just in my initial testing, they seem to be more sensitive to camera shake and inaccurate focusing, though it could be just me getting used to the new camera body.

Thanks again for your response!

You may have very old versions of the lenses that lack vibration reduction.  It’s easy to tell, VR is written right on the lens.

But just from an image quality perspective the new VRii and AF-P lenses are better matched to the high-resolution sensors like on the D7100.

Re: Firmware update on D7100?

The newer AF-P lenses like the 70-300 will grab and lock focus better in low light, and focus faster and quieter.

Re: Firmware update on D7100?

Well, the lens upgrade will have to wait for now.

I do have the early VR versions which worked really well on my D90. Shots with my prime looked pretty good, so hopefully, I can adjust to the higher resolution.

I also have to experiment on the auto focus settings I think. I usually just use single point.  I've only had the camera for a day so still much to learn. Thanks again for the input. Much appreciated!

Re: Firmware update on D7100?

I believe the ability to use AF-P lenses makes applying the updates a must do.  Many of the AF-P lenses are excellent.

Re: Firmware update on D7100?

Yes, you are right, my mistake. I've just checked the Nikon AF-P compatibility chart *, and v 1.04 is indeed needed for the lens to work at all. I should have said "and I still don't have full compatibility" - chiefly, I can't turn the VR off if I want to, but so far I haven't wanted to.

And yes, the AF-P lenses are very nice so if OP wants to try them at any stage a firmware update will be needed.
