Generic telextender?

Hi folks!

I recently bought one of the Canon 2x telextenders right before a vacation. I had wanted one for my 550d based kit anyway and figured this would be a good time to expand.

My mistake was to not try and fit the tele until I was on vacation and found out that it was designed to work with specific lenses and would not fit others.

My previous tele experience was from back in the film days when they worked with any lens that fit the mount. Or at least all the teles I ever had would work with any lens.

Are there teles that work with any lens in these brave new digital times?

Re: Generic telextender?

My Kenko 1.4x DGX works with just about all of my lenses on my 700D.  The Canon 1.4x did not and neither would it play well with the 100-400 because of the camera.

Personally I wouldn't go 2x, just too much loss in aperture and auto-focus capability but I guess it depends on how you intend to use it.  As a footnote I don't find myself using it much as I seem to lose as much quality as I gain in reach unless the light is really good but then I want(ed) it for birding/wildlife.

The Canon shop refunded the Canon extender.
