Barred Owl with P900 at ISO 1600 and 1/8s
4

I have had my P900 for awhile now and take it along on walks when exploring trails and woodlands. Ran into a barred owl today. These wooded areas are known to have low light and wasn't sure the P900 was up to the task.

I braced the P900 against a tree and shot at ISO 1600 at 1/8s. Not bad.

Impressive....I'm surprised it would be so good at ISO 1600 in particular!

Thanks.  I too am often surprised at how good the higher ISO shots come out with the P900.  They're not perfect as in-camera noise reduction can affect the quality to a degree but overall, the images are quite nice.  I added 1/3 exposure compensation.  I like to shoot-to-the-right in low light conditions when I can get away with it.

Very impressive shot! I would be happy myself if I could get something like this with my P1000.

I notice this particular photo has a size of 585X800. Assuming the original is from the camera, did you crop or resize to this size?

Thanks!

I was thinking about your photo...it was pretty even lighting, even though the light was not great.  I think when I've gotten a photo with terrible noise at a higher ISO, it was a case in which the light was not only low, but there was a big range of very dark areas together with lighter areas, and the P900 can't handle that kind of dynamic range as well...so the darkest areas show the most noise.

If I see an interesting subject, I'll always give it a try and sometimes I'm surprised at how it turns out!  Always good to give it a shot!

Interesting observations. I would agree with your assessment.

The dynamic range is really the problem here. When he used "expose to the right", the potential noise problems associated with very dark areas are somewhat lessened. I would further speculate that Nikon in-body noise algorithms to process raw sensor date to generate JPGs could have a very uniform noise profile to deal with, hence very effectively achieving quite "noise-less" JPG results. Noise profiles for dark parts are very different from those of highlights or overexposed areas.

..yes, one of the techniques to lighten up the shadows..

..is to use the combination of Center-weighed Metering & Exposure Compensation..

..usually for Exposure Compensation, would normally use either +0.33ev or +0.67ev..

..thanks for sharing & keep on snapping..

..Cheers, John..

Yes, this wsa both cropped and resized.  I plan to upgaede to the P1000 in a cople of years.  I went for the P900 because it was selling for about $600 less.

Thanks Kjaay.  Too much emphasis is placed on noise when the important thing is to get the photo.  Avoid noise when you can but if the choice is photo with noise or no photo at all, if the photos is important enough...take the shot.
