curious... would setup work on a Pana G9 as well, or just on oly body ?

As the physical "key" on the MC converters affects lenses that go onto it, not the camera behind it, this Fotga/ Pixco setup should be fine on a Pana body.

Thanks for the feedback, will try it for sure !

I tested the mc-14 +2 10mm ext tubes + dcr250 in the field this morning.

Working in the field at so high magnification is not easy as all. I definitively need a macro rail ! Though the EM5II + all the stacked lenses and tubes remains compact and light compared to similar APSC/FF mount.

This is a portrait of a beautiful Ectophasia crassipennis fly. I have also done some stacks but I will need some time to process them.

Pretty exciting isnt it?

Some of you are using the Raynox 250.  Would anybody know what is the difference between the Raynox and the Olympus MCON-P)2 Macro Converter ?

I really am not sure.  I know that the Raynox 250 is extremely sharp and worth the $65

There is a typo in my question:  the correct name is MCON-P02.

Olympus doesn't give any specifics except saying it allows non macro lens to do macro work.  It is a 46mm lens that screws like a filter in front of the lens.

I just got it and a quick test shows that it allows the 60mm lens to focus at 55mm instead of 82mm.  With the MC-14 + 2 x 10mm spacers + 60mm lens + MCON-P02, it focuses at 47mm instead of 69mm without it.

Sounds similar.  I wonder how many diopters it is?

Wow, this looks INCREDIBLE...

Please excuse a rather nooby question: how do you make the fly stay steady for the amount of time you need to setup the tripod, fiddle with the camera settings and actually shoot the 56 photos???

Thanks!

I don't know what the specifications are and Olympus does not say.  This is why I ask.  Screw-on construction seems better than the Raynox clip-on but will fit only lenses 46mm and smaller.  It comes with a 46-37mm step-down ring.  From my measurements, it seems to reduce the minimum focusing distance by 32% and objects appear about 30% larger.

You hold its favorite squeaky toy overhead while taking the shots.

Actually, I have the same question. Not everybody can stalk bugs when it's below freezing out.

The Raynox comes with a clip-on adapter but I do not use it - the actual lens detaches and has a threading.

Now, guys, seriously. I fully understand the technical background of macro photography, but what about the insect <> photographer interaction? How do you find your targets in the field and how do you make them stay long enough for a serious shot?

Thanks, Bass

I don't use any magic powder. The cool temperature of early morning keeps the bugs still for some time. I think I have shot about 500 pics of this fly before it started waking up.

MC-14 + 35-100mm f2.8

JulesGo wrote:

The 10mm Fotga fits the MC-14 but the 16mm does not. The inside diameter of the 16mm is not wide enough to fit the extension of the TC.

This made me curious enough as I already had same Fotga tubes, so ordered used MC-14 and tried to fit those:

MC-14 + 10mm & 16mm Fotga tubes

EM5.1 + MC-14 + tubes + 35-100mm f2.8

The lens will autofocus only when set to 100mm and it has to be almost touching the target to be able to focus.

I tried MC-14 combination with Pana 35-100mm f2.8, and it will autofocus when manually prefocused to near right focus zone. Otherwise just goes hunting (this also might be due my EM5.1).

A quick experiment with lousy lighting, handholding & AF:

@35mm + Canon 500D Close-Up lens SOOC

@ 100mm (without 500D) SOOC

For comparison, plain 35-100mm @100mm SOOC  (apologizing the setup + lighting)

This does not bode well for my GAS: I was thinking just upgrading my EM5.1, but it seems I'm going to get a 60mm macro also. And that leads to ...

I ordered the Pixco extension tubes, hoping that the MC-14 would fit in the 16mm tube.  Just like the Fotga tubes, it does not.  Also, they are very cheap and the metal finish is quite rough.  The Fotga tubes are not high quality but they are a better buy.

So, I will continue using 2 x 10mm Fotga tubes with the MC-14 and the 60mm macro lens.

Re: Using the MC-14 Teleconverter on the Olympus 60mm macro lens

I have just bought a set of Fogta extension tubes. The 10mm fitted the MC-14 fine, I added the Kenko 10mm in front, it fitted OK, but there was no signal between lens and camera. After a bit of investigation I found that the 10mm does not connect to my EM1 mk2, but does connect at to the Fogta 16mm tube . The 16mm tube seems good however and connects to everything. So I measured the difference in barrel internal diameter between the two, it is about 0.3mm. I then removed 0.2 mm or so from the inside of the 16mm extension tube using a box cutter and emery paper.  After a couple of tries the MC-14 fitted perfectly.

So my setup is :Camera, MC-14, Fogta 16mm tube, 60mm Macro lens. No need for a second tube.

It all connects up and focusses nicely. Magnification is impressive, stacking works so I will be off hunting insects tomorrow.

Thanks for the original tip and happy hacking!
