That was a risky proposition ... I'd bet the A3000 would more likely turn someone off from "real" cameras ! Glad he took to it, though.

It's a muscle car camera. Stripped down body, great sensor (engine).

Sound about right. And I don't think Sony used that 20MP sensor in many camera, which seems strange because it was really good from the reviews/samples I can recall.

Re: Prime as first lens for a beginner

It just dawned on me, I'm well known in the family as the photography nut and my niece mentioning her Instagram account and her interest in film in a Skype conversation may not have been a coincidence. She may have learned a few things from her mother - my sisterĀ

Pentax also used it in the KS2, another vastly underrated camera. It still sells brand new for around $500 and much less used, which I think would be an even better cheapish camera to potentially convert young people. That's probably what I would go for next time another member of our next generation shows an interest.

Good point. She won't be replacing her phone with a film camera, just as I still shoot an occasional roll myself

I find it interesting the way some people go back to film (as opposed to people like your niece trying it out bas something completely new).

One of my brothers (John, who has also contributed to this thread) and one of my sons occasionally use film and enjoy it; these days it has no appeal for me at all. But I have enjoyed scanning and digitally processing some of their B&W negatives.

but still have my ILCs. I think it's just another way to enjoy photography. Part of the workflow will be totally different though more work but I hope that would be part of the fun for her. I imagine that in certain circles with today's young university students that carrying around a film camera also carries a certain cachet, I've certainly seen it where I teach, and sharing prints with friends would be one way to be slightly different than most.

I hope so.

Make certain you don't make her carry a typewriter in her other hand...
