After reading the specs and the reviews I was really excited about purchasing this camera. Unfortunately Canon (and other camera manufacturers) are taking a page from the airlines pricing playbook. Charge a basic price and rip you off on the extras. The camera does not come with a cable and the Canon cable is $60!!! The camera handles well and the menus are well organized. The AF is ok but not great for any action applications. For $899 I don't think it is too much to expect a cable to be included.

I have an Olympus camera that came with a cable. I can only charge the battery that's in the camera, and only when I'm not using it. I'd much rather have a separate charger that charges my spare battery while I'm using the camera. I see in-camera charging as a nifty ttrickbut not my method of  regular charging.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. I'm not"from the dead" and I don't see how I was putting canon down. I certainly meant no offense.

Well, not for nothing the G5X II comes with a battery charger, where as the RX100 VII only comes with a cable and no battery charger. If I had to choose, I'd opt for the battery charger.

Pretty much right on.  Same for the SX70 I now own.  Paid C $33.00 for the Canon cable for photo offloading as the WiFi app is gimmicky and unreliable at best.  For the camera price there is no excuse.  It's all a big marketing ploy.  There has been very little advance in image quality over the past decade even with real hardware improvements.

You're better off with a card reader for offloading images anyway.  If you really need it, I'm pretty sure it's not necessary to spring for a Canon cable.

I don't see why a reviewer who doesn't make a positive review and doesn't post frequently makes the review invalid. The the point raised in the review is valid.

I own a G5X ii.

This seems a bit of a muddle of a camera review highly slanted by an angry complaint about the cost of a specific accessory, which can bought elsewhere at a cheap cost and not really relevant to most users.

Overpriced official accessories are a general problem across all makes and not unique to Canon.

I realise that a PD charger is need but is a special USB-C cable needed?

It's a different issue.  The Oly user is complaining about a charger that's not included with the Olympus (it is included with the G5X II) but is missing the cable (which is not on the Canon).  So, there really wasn't much point to the comment.  A generic cable is a very low-cost item, so although it's not included if one needs the cable it's not a large expense.  The charger cost on the other hand, is not insignificant.

Go to threaded view when replying else you will not know who you are talking to. Interesting you get 3 likes presumably from other people in flat view who equally do not know who is talking to who.

Ah, yes.  I do prefer flat view and it usually works fine on my computer. I was using a phone before, and that doesn't even show whom a post is responding to as it does on the PC. More annoyingly, the phone view lacks the ability to jump to the first unread post from the main forum page. Maybe threaded does make sense on the phone. Thanks for pointing that out.

@RedFox88

Yes, I shoot Olympus. i also have a  Sony A7 Mark3. I've owned Nikons and Canons in the past . This isn't about tribalism or brand loyalty. My point, perhaps badly made, is that there is a new trend in cameras to leave out essential elements that were previously included. A cable to connect to your computer or charge the camera is not too much to ask. I object equally to Sony not including a charger with the A7 and charging $80 as an accessory. I bought the Canon expecting to like it. It was disappointing in both its performance and in how the kit was packaged. The point is that we as consumers are being ripped off by the camera companies charging (exorbitantly) for accessories that were previously included. I'm not knocking it because it is a Canon. I bought it, i used it and I returned it. I was merely sharing my experience. If it wasn't helpful, sorry!

I, for one, am glad to not pay extra to have a cable included.  Just like previous versions of USB, we will all eventually have a drawer full of redundant cables if every device you get comes bundled with a cable.

I have two USB-C to USB-C cables, one that came with my PD power bank and the other that came with my Pixel 3 smartphone.  Both work to charge the G5X II with either the power bank or a PD wall charger.  I don't believe there is anything special about these cables.

Japanese are so mean to customers worldwide, they are robbing money everywhere.

That's why Trump calls for rebuild US manufacturing.

I'd opt for using the battery charger every time so I am okay with that. Those cables are cheap and I would expect that it would come with one though. I get the general point being made as the new Ricoh GR III doesn't have the onboard flash of the previous model and Ricoh doesn't supply an external one. The LX100 came with a small light duty external flash.

Back to the review. I'm not into shooting sports or kids with a point and shoot so the low rating there is okay for me. The fixed lens Fuji is known for it's focusing issues (!) but I have a great time shooting with it.

Good news on the landscape/scenery high score. Many of my travel shots with a point and shoot include some of that.

The OP also seems pleased with the portrait, low light and still shooting. I have been wondering about the "new" lens and it seems decent. I still have my RX100 IV and if the G5X II lens is about the same (or better?) I most likely would enjoy the camera. Most of us have other cameras but in my life there is always room for a good point and shoot.

USB.  But it's a 2-month old thread and the OP never replied to any of the other responses anyway.

No special cable. In any case a cable ( atually two types) always comes with a PD charger.
