Best settings for X-T100?

Hi

I just want to ask you, what your favorite settings for the X-T100 are. Colors, Brightness, NR etc.

Did you notice the over saturated colors too? I don't like that too much.

Maybe you are shooting exclusively in one of the film simulations? Please tell me why, I just need some tips since I'm a newbie.

Thank you!
Martin

That is really such a open-ended question, that...

...you will get a variety of opinions, and no two will wholeheartedly agree.

Judging by your question, I'm inferring (I could be wrong) that you just got your X-T00, and perhaps are a novice when it comes to DSLR's or Mirrorless cameras in general?  And I didn't mean for that to sound sarcastic, which I wasn't trying to be.

Typically, if you are a beginner/novice, I'd suggest just putting your camera settings under Program, and then set Auto ISO.  I'd then also set your file quality to JPG Fine.  Under your various Fuji film simulation settings, you have a wealth of options.  The nice thing about it all is to try different settings, taking photos under each setting.  Write them down and then look at your photos in some type of software.  If you believe that more saturation is needed, change your Fuji film simulation setting - it's that simple.

The key here is that as time goes on, and if you've been keeping up with advancing your knowledge on photography and Fuji settings in general (i.e. reading these forums as much as possible, or other websites), you'll catch yourself experimenting even more, taking your camera off of P mode and delving into A, S, or M mode.  The sky is the limit to be sure.

Then there are those folks who shoot in JPG mode only, while others (like myself included) who shoot only in RAW mode because we want the extra headroom that these files allow for.

So good luck...

Just a friendly reminder here homies - bear in mind that any posting of mine represents my opinion only - not those of other folks - nor am I implying that others will feel the same way that I do about a given issue or camera. I advance suggestions or information based on my having used a camera (or cameras) - not purely on blind speculation. However, If you feel absolutely compelled to argue about a personal opinion of mine, please feel free to go ahead and do so - without my participation of course - and that would be quite an interesting conversation to say the least.

I would take the defaults on everything, but set Raw+JPEG for possible editing. In some situations (bright light and shadow) I would have a custom setting for Auto DR.

Did you notice the over saturated colors too? I don't like that too much.

The X-T100 has more saturated reds than the X-T3 and X-T30, but not significantly so. I can't explain the yellows you got in a post on a different forum. See below - I edited one of your images with GIMP Auto White Balance - much less yellow.

It is possible that you have white balance set wrong. I can't tell from the EXIF, which does not seem complete, as it is missing film simulation etc. I suspect you edited the image.

Yes, they all have their place. If you want less saturation, try Pro Neg Std.

Have it on Provia film setting, is quite muted. Also dial down highlights & shadows -1 to get less contrasty pictures. Also apply negative EV of 1/3. That's all. Should be fine with that.

PS All my Fuji's started overexposing when zooming in. Go figure.

I got my X-T100 a year or so ago.

Mostly I shoot manual lenses so my settings might not mean much for you.

Dynamic range = DR100, White Balance = Auto, Film Simulation varies but usually Provia or Monochrome, Color = -1, Sharpness = -1, Highlight Tone = -1, Shadow Tone = -1, Noise Reduction = -2, Long Exposure NR = ON, MF Assist = Peak >> Red (high), Photometry = [] (Average metering), Shoot Without Lens = ON, Image Quality = N+Raw.

Frequently I'll shoot with +0.3 EV compensation, but I have a live histogram in the EVF and on the LCD, and expose accordingly by adjusting EV. I try to set ISO so my shutter speeds are fast. The rendering is great even at ISO 3200 and above, if you don't mind a little grain (noise). Coming from a film background, I don't mind.

I usually shoot in Aperture Priority mode and set the lens to a specific aperture.

I've come to like a little less color saturation. However, the settings above apply to the JPG version and only serve as guidelines for the Raw developer (I use the free Fuji/Silkypix raw developer).

Not sure about your workflow but here is some information about mine. I'm just a hobbyist.

When I get done developing the raw, I export a JPG then open it again in Photoshop Elements 13. I usually run "Auto Smart Fix" at the very least, or I start with lighting adjustments and normalize the histogram by dragging the little triangles under the histogram. Frequently I will also adjust saturation, although I sometimes adjust it in the raw developer.

Sharpening and resizing is a big deal, best honed by lots of practice.

I hope this has been helpful.

Re: Best settings for X-T100?

Hi Tom,

I too shoot with the xt100 and manual lenses (7artisans 25mm, 35mm and 55m) however, I relied on the P mode instead while setting the autoiso to get max 1/100 or 1/40 indoors when I have a more steady hand.

When you use AP, is that so you can record the f stop in the photo?

Using manual focus lense really rekindled the excitement in photography.

Re: Best settings for X-T100?

I find the colors different from my other Fuji cameras. Also my photometry menu item is locked for some reason.

any ideas?

my settings are also -1 for colors, highlights and shadows.

I'm glad auto ISO is working for you.  I find it a little bit confusing and would like to have better control of it.  So I use manual ISO control.

I use aperture priority where I set ISO and then let the metering set the shutter speed.  I don't have any electronics in the lenses, so I don't know how to embed my chosen aperture into the photo.  Of course the Fuji electronic lenses all will work and they will embed the aperture into the photo EXIF.  Not the non-electronic third party lenses I use.

Yes, manual focus and aperture really connects me to the camera in a visceral way, and I like shooting this way.

Yes the color rendering is a little bit different but I don't find it unpleasant.  If you are using any of the "advanced" shooting modes your photometry might be locked.

If you change to plain Aperture Priority mode, you should be able to change your photometry.  Sorry I only really know about Aperture Priority.

Good luck!

Hi Debo

Photometry is locked because you have face detect on. With face detech off you can change photometry
