Photogammetry

I'm interested in photogammetry and curious if anyone here is?

Photogammetry is creating 3D objects from a series of photos. There are quite a few free apps (Meshroom, 3DF Zephyr and others) available.

How do the results of a 3D scanner compare to photogammetry?

I like to create 3D models from scratch. 3D modeling is quite labor intensive when creating from scratch. However I have quite a few diecast car models I would like to scan to a 3D object and render in a 3D scene using e-onsoftware's Vue Creator.

I've tried several times to take a series of photos with one of my Nikon & Olympus dslrs and my results were far from stellar and looked miserable compared to the objects I seen on sketchfab.com. Getting consistent lighting during the initial photographing steps seems to be a key.

Any tips or comments on photogammetry or 3D scanning would be much appreciated.

Hi, kenmo,

It might be stimulating of discussion if you would post a few examples of your more successful as well as of less successful efforts.

Re: Photogammetry

I have no experience on this.

I found this on youtube. It appears you just need a smart phone to take the multiple photos. The software does all the work from there on.

Re: Photogammetry

Here are some screen captures of the 3D object that was generated from a series of photos of a porcelain model of a 1957 Chevy Corvette.

As can be seen I have much to learn about Meshroom and photogammetry.  3D modeling is not something new to me as I've been dabbling in creating 3D models from scratch for 15-20 years. But photogammetry is something foreign to me. But I do find appealing as it combines my love of photography with my love of 3D modeling.  Plus I a, a car nut, owning an classic Corvette.

Re: Photogammetry

Hi kenmo,

Photogrammetry is a great way to capture our reality in 3D.

For beginners I would recommend the Agisoft https://www.agisoft.com/.

For more advanced users the https://www.capturingreality.com/.

This is the link to some of my photogrammetry scans on Sketchfab gallery:

Re: Photogammetry

Logged into my Sketchfab account and looked at your 3D work. It is outstanding. I dabble in 3D modeling (Hexagon3D, Silo3D, Moi3D, DAZ3D Studio and 3DCoat) and use e-on's Vue for rendering.

Especially liked your rat rod as cars are another passion of mine.

Thank you.

Photogrammetry is my passion ( at least for now :-)).

If subject is right, it gives the opportunity  to capture it in 3D without expensive 3D scanner.

Re: Photogammetry

Guys, I'd like to try photogrammetry but as an addition to traditional 3d scanning.

I have Artec Eva Lite . It's good, but it doesn't capture textures. The manufacturer offered me to upgrade it to full Eva, which as they told me do capture textured.
I've asked for a demo.... This is not an option for me. The textures are far away from what I need so it easier to texture my scans by myself instead from taking them from the scanner.
I've seen that photogrammetry provides very good textures.
I have Canon EOS R , Studio with homogeneous (equal) scattered light, tripod. Everything that I seems to need to do photogrammetry. Except the software.
As I understand there are two options: make a 3d model with photogrammetry, then bake textures from it to the model made with the scanner. Or I hope, maybe there's some software that can transfer captured textures to the model while processing photos.
Could anyone recommend some if possible?
I won't care much about the price if the software will worth it.

Re: Photogammetry

Very inspiring. I bought 3Dzephyr on Steam in 2017 and have tried it a couple of times. Usually I get 1 out of 10 ok-ish. But mostly, they are complete failures. The best scan I did was a huge statue in Berlin a couple of years ago. I used a Sony RX1 and took about 30 pictures walking around that statue. It was about 10 meters high. I wish I could share it, but the harddrive that had it on crashed som time ago.

In my experience it works best with matte objects. Glossy surfaces reflect the light different depending on the angle you take the picture and I guess that confuses the software. Using diffusers didn't improve the result in my case.

I tried to scan an acoustic guitar a couple of weeks ago (my first attempted scan in 2 years), and it failed miserably. The main problem I believe is to reduce the glare from the surface. I was thinking about spraying something, maybe som sort of dust or equal on the guitar to reduse the gloss.

I was hoping to find a way to scan more valuable instruments, like old violin-type historic instruments. But I can't see that spraying anything on them would be acceptable, because of the value of these historic instruments.

I just do it for fun, but if I find a good solution it may be useful to some people I know.

Anyway, just my 2 cents and very inspiring work there Gregory360!

Santa Claus figurine

I was so impressed with 3DF Zephyr 6.5 demo that I purchased it after it's demo ran out.

I started to scan some of my late Mother's Christmas decorations and village items she purchased over the years.

I used my Nikon D7000, Nikkor 35 mm 1.8 lens, tripod and shot on a tripod. Photos captured in RAW and processed and converted to JPEF using Lightroom CC.

Re: Photogammetry

Even though this may be closing soon, I just found by accident a solution to a problem I mentioned in my reply earlier. When scanning a glossy object for photogrammetry there is a spray:

AESUB scanningspray

Since I just found out I haven't tried it yet - but it sounds interesting enough for me to share with this thread.
