G9 with Metabones T Speedbooster XL 0.64X problem

Hi - I am hoping that the collective MFT forum may have some ideas for me.

I recently purchased a G9 (running v1.3 firmware) with the intent that I could use the same Speedbooster I had been happily using on my G7, in order to mount my Canon EF glass.

To my dismay, the G9 gives me the "...lens not attached properly.  Do not press the release button..." error every time I try to mount it - does not matter if it is SB alone, or with the lens attached, camera off or camera powered on.

The SB is running the latest firmware (v3.31), though I have tried back-revving it all the way down to v2.70, all to no avail.

I have looked closely at the menus on the G9, and I do not see a "Shoot with no lens" option any more.   Am I missing one or more settings which play a role in working with an adapted lens?

Thank you in advance for your thoughts!!!  This message will also be posted in the Adapted Lens forum...

-Regards...

Mark

It should be plug and play without needing to change any settings at all. All recent Panasonic cameras do not have the "shoot without lens" menu option as they all (including the S1 line) will automatically allow you to shoot without a lens when lens contacts aren't detected (that setting is more for manual lenses and adapters without contacts).

It will come down to metabones releasing a firmware update to make it work the G9 @ 1.03.

Surprisingly there are others who had issues with the G9 and metabones and quite a few more people who specifically use viltrox only. Hopefully you come up with a solution... good luck!

It sounds like the speedbooster is an electronic one, and therefore should allow the the EF lens to communicate with the camera, and so allow the camera to autofocus and control the aperture. Which sounds like it is not working ("...lens not attached properly.")

If you enable the shoot without lens setting, all that is going to happen is that the camera will accept that it can't commuinicate with the lens. This is not what you want - how are you now going to set the aperture and focus?

I suggest that you contact the Metabones support people, I have found them to be very helpful.

Thanks for your responses.    I have already reached out to Metabones Support, but so far they have not yet provided a response (in fairness, it is a public Holiday here in the US...).   I am keeping fingers crossed....

Does anyone know of a procedure to DOWN-rev the firmware on a Panasonic G9 - I would love to test the Speed Booster with v1.2.

Using the normal process, it appears that you can't go backwards....

Thanks!!

Is this a general v1.3 firmware issue with the G9?  My G9 works perfectly with Metabones and Viltrox adapters at v1.2 firmware.  Viltrox has a few lens compatibility issues that are not related to mounting the lenses.

SOLVED!!! The culprit proved to be an almost imperceptible burr on the base-plate of the SB adapter, at the edge of the "pin-locating" hole which mates to the lens pin on the camera body.

Evidently, as the adapter was rotated into place, the burr prevented the pin from expanding into the hole in the adapter and thus registering as a release button press.

I taped up the critical bits of the adapter, then used a Dremel Tool to grind off the burr, and slightly widen the hole also to more closely match those on my native lenses.

Thorough cleaning of adapter and pins, then success - MB SB XL0.64X (v3.31) running on G9 (v1.3).

Et Voila!!!

Thank you all for your thoughts and suggestions.

Glad that you worked it out Mark - now enjoy ...

Now the way is clear for an Ultra 0.64x at some future stage when my lens enthusiasm gets control of my common sense

I do have a lot of EF lenses and I do use them on M4/3 bodies and the Metabones adapters are expensive (but very good). As I sometimes need more than one adapter at the same time I added Viltrox to my adapter count.  They do work well and also for many lenses but their compatibility id not as wide as that of Metabones - Viltrox specifically advised me that their focal reduction adapters don’t work on lenses f1.2 and faster - which I know by experience is true.

Having both Metabones and Viltrox means that I can mix and match compatibilities when put to the test.

Glad to hear it wasn't firmware related and that it's working! Enjoy~
