This is a very sensible and versatile trinity, for a 7D Mark II.

By accident of availability, I learned to use Canon and Nikon DSLRs at the same time. I love specific lenses made by both Canon and Nikon, too much to quit either system. Dabbling with Leica-M is fun, too. I am, certainly, not an expert.

How do you handle projects with that gap in coverage?

I have two more:

Light weight, good light:

  1. 10-18STM
  2. 18-135nano-USM
  3. 55-250STM

Low-light:

  1. Sigma 18-35/1.8
  2. 50/1.8STM
  3. Canon 70-200/2.8L IS II

I usually bring four-five lenses though, not just three.

Use the old 2 feet zoom

or crop, I have a 5Ds so have good cropping ability with the 16-35 which minimises the gap to the 100.

It is obviously not perfect but found these 3 suited, for example, my San Francisco and Alaska cruise holiday perfectly.

Most of what I shoot is in poor light, so love my big apertures.

16-35 f4

24-70 f2.8 ii

70-200 f2.8 ii

I shoot indoor sports. Why the 16-35 f4 over the f2.8? I don't need the 16-23mm range for wide shots, I use those focal ranges only for group photos or shots of public/arenas, it's stabilized, lighter and left quite a nice chunk of $ in my bank account.

600/4 II

100-400 II

24-105/4 Mark I

The competent but unexciting 24-105 doesn't belong in that august company, but it's the lens I have and the Mark II is apparently no real improvement. I believe the new RF 24-105 is much better, but there aren't any bodies for it good enough to make me want to swap. (I have an EOS R, and mostly use it with the 24-104, but although it has many strengths, it's not half the all-round performer the 5D IV is, and in some ways inferior to the ancient 5D II. So no RF lenses for me. Not until there is an R body good enough to deserve them.)

I have a variety of other lenses, but those three account for more than 90% of my use, and the excellent 16-35/4 much of the remainder.

Re: What’s in your trinity?

I seem to reevaluate my kit about once a year and my current trinity is the 16-35/4LIS, 50L and 100LIS. The 85LIS is a beautiful lens but the others cover my needs if I can only carry three. I've bought and sold a few 200/2.8's but it seemed to get little use. I owned the Nikon 35-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8 back in the film days but figured out that I preferred primes.

From some reviewers, Kai specifically, they proclaimed it to be the best mid range zoom in the ef system.

My actual "rebel" trinity is 24-28-50, 24 and 50 are STM version, the 28mm is the old 2.8 from the ninety. I know that 28mm is really close to 24mm but i am really enjoying the 28mm focal lenght. I found myself being a bit of a canon snob. My shooting experience is heavely influenced by the AF system and Canon lenses makes me really happy.

I've also aquired a 50mm compact macro recently but i really dont know if i will keenping it long term.
