The Greatest Camera You Never Knew About
8

I've wanted this camera since I first found out about it, five years ago. For five years, I kept talking myself out of getting it. It was "too old" or the sensor was "too small", I wasn't sure about the quality of a camera made by Samsung, who isn't even in the camera business anymore, etc.

Well, I ended up making a video dedicated to how great this camera is;

Here are a few key points that stand out, to me;

-Magnesium Body
-Real hot shoe
-In camera charging
-Schneider Kreuznach optics
-24mm f1.4 at the wide end
-Built in ND filter
-Fully articulating AMOLED screen
-Front control wheel
-BSI Sensor
-Dual Image Stabilization
-Full function "Smart" features, such as social media sharing, apps, etc.
-Wifi (full featured, works with "smart" functions)
-In camera video editing
-Close focus of 1cm
-24-80mm zoom range (covers 95% of scenarios)
-Onboard stereo mic is very good
-Video autofocus is very good
-1/4000 maximum shutter speed
-Great ergonomics with good grip and one-hand functionality
-Dedicated buttons and dials for nearly every function/feature

This camera was years ahead of its time and still hangs with the big boys, even today. This camera should have been a hit and gone on to acquire "legendary" status. Unfortunately, it was made by Samsung. So, nobody knew about it.

The silver lining is that you can now buy these, second hand, for less than $100. You'd be hard pressed to find a better camera for the money.

Just a question. How s the internal ND works?

Why don't we have more hybrids with internal NDs? That is the feature that could skyrocket a video orientated hybrid/camera. Not even BlackMagic Pocket or GH5s offer such feature.

The rx100 series also has an ND filter, well up until the version where they changed the lens to a slower, longer lens.

It's an actual ND filter, just like you would use on the front of a lens. In this case, though, it's smaller and it is inside the body of the camera. When activated, it slides between the lens and the sensor.

I think the primary reason you don't see this on cameras with larger sensors is due to a lack of space. Most manufacturers are trying to put a large sensor into a very compact body with as much stuff packed inside as possible. With this camera, it's got a sensor a little smaller than what you'd find on an RX100 while still being inside a body that is slightly larger than an RX100. Not only does this have some simple and immediate benefits like better cooling, but it also provides more free space for additional functions & features. In this case, they decided to add an internal ND filter.

For me the joy of photography is in the prints I make myself.
