For those who own the camera, what are your thoughts
What do you like what do you not like
What made you choose this over a competitor such as the RX100

The use of G5x2 has been about two weeks, first to say two shortcomings, the first, like other compact cameras, dust is very easy into the lens, even if you carefully protect, according to the online disassembly, the blade lens cover of the boom has a gap, this design has not been improved for many years, will cause dust into the first-level lens glass inside. I have decided to buy a UV that is on a 3M double-sided adhesive paste.

The second problem, low-light shooting video, slow focus, generally need 3-4s to transfer to the new subject, this problem, Canon may later release a new firmware to optimize, but no matter how optimized, it is difficult to reach the M6, M50 those with double-core focus models. But I rarely shoot videos, and it doesn't matter.

For the quality of the picture, I feel good, but the big light difference conditions have some purple edge phenomenon, because there is no other camera comparison, not good to say how to evaluate. Another problem, I have not been able to find the best hard shell bag for it.

Just got mine in the mail. Only took a few pics on auto before battery died . Charging now.

Thoughts:

Body feels lighter than g7x ii. Also chintzier. Plastic feels thinner. Easier to carry but probably less durable than last gen.

Wheel around lens is light plastic. Feels like a toy. So does the d-pad wheel. When you rotate it to set the time, it's like there's nothing there.

G1x iii body is leagues ahead in feel. Also heavier though.

Its already way sharper than the g1x iii I just returned. Autofocus closeup seems to suck though. Can't tell where the minimum focus distance is because it keeps breathing and telling me to engage the flash.

The devil's key

I agree, feels real cheap... The plastic ring around the lens has no resistance and can get bump real easy... I'm keeping my G7XII

I took two pictures and kept the better of each. Not taken on the same day so not perfectly framed the same.

Re: G5X mark II - regarding the plastic feel
1

I've seen other comments regarding the plastic body. I'm not all worked up over that as the rubberized coating does have a nice feel in the hand. The Rx100 is small and slippery

The big question is does plastic equate to a short life span?  I agree fully the ring definItaly feels cheap and chintzy

Spec wise the G5X checks off more of my wants then the RX100

No resistance? So if you give it a good flick how long will the the ring spin for?

Is it not an advantage to hold the camera and turn the ring  with one hand?

There is some resistance. It's just enough to keep it from accidental turns. I use it to change aperture with no issue. It's clicky but it's s cheap sounding click. It's super light and barely feels attached to the camera. If you turn it enough times it might snap off. I rarely use the ring so it's not too big a deal for me.

I'm more concerned about the evf. It looks nice and big, but the housing (which you have to pull and push) is thin plastic and it wiggles a bit. The little box might detach if you put too much strain on it.

Another thing is when holding the camera, you can easily push down on the evf and flaah covers on the top and they depress and flex a bit, like giant rectangular buttons. This is the thing that always reminds me of the chintzy body. If I'm filming something and need my right hand, i grab the whole body including the top with my left and my fingers are holding on to these wobbly flexy "buttons". It doesn't really affect my grip or anything. It just feels chintzy. The rx100va I had previously the top covers were metal and had some gaps so it wasn't perfectly clean lookung but man was it tightly integrated. No give or wiggle. It was like one seamless solid piece to hold onto. The body was ultimately too small and the optical stabilization not good enough sadly.

The chintzy plastic is disappointing. I expect this level of plastic on a $200 camera. Not a $900 one. The camera is lighter but we are talking mere grams here. My initial impression of it being noticeably lighter might just be some of the flex I felt.

I've had it for a couple weeks now and it's definitely a keeper.  AF speed, lens reach and sharpness are just right for my needs.  I really like the size, weight and feel compared to my RX100m3.  AF and IQ are on par with that, just longer reach with nice aperture.  I really don't have any issue or concern about build quality...the lens ring is plastic but whatever - keeps weight down and works well for step zooming.

Overall very pleased!

Anyone interested in buying my RX100m3? Will list on FM soon.

My thoughts after two weeks
12

I received the camera about 2 weeks ago. I have not yet had the time to explore all the features but I have been able to use it on various occasions and here are my first impressions:

- The camera is well built and seems solid to me. I have already owned two Sony RX100 (IV & VI) models in the past and besides the body of the metal device I believe these two are similar.

- I love the electronic viewfinder. Nothing to envy to the RX100s.

- I love the grip. Very ergonomic and frankly I do not understand why Sony does not include one on its models. That makes all the difference.

- The touch screen is very good, clear and sharp, and is very responsive. It can be compared to any current phone. In addition, the ability to change the autofocus point is very convenient.

- I like the fact that the flash can be used for an indirect flash bounce.

- The lens is exactly what a lens should be for this type of device. fast, small, with an ideal focal length to be used in everyday life and traveling. It is the main reason why I bought the camera. Its performance is quite acceptable for my needs and its sharpness has nothing to envy the Sony if you want my opinion. Beware though I am NOT a pixel peeper.

- The colors out of camera are beautiful, and the jpg renderings are usually beautiful too, although I adjusted the sharpness a tick up that makes all the difference. (I have not tested raw yet)

- The menus are well done and the ability to add custom menus is very convenient.

Some weak points that come to mind:

- The autofocus is not the fastest. For everyday and normal use as well as for travel, I do not think this is a problem. But do not try to take your children playing rugby or football and hoping to get spot on focus everytime.

- The battery does not last very long. Get extra batteries. They are small though, so for me it it not a problem carrying 2-3 extras.

In short, so far, I love this little camera. It represents everything I need when I travel. Its operation is fast, the front multifunction ring is practical (I use it for opening). I have not made videos yet, so I can not judge this feature. I hope it will help you a little.

Hi all ,

Just received my G5X Mii

For comparison I can go back to my last power shot the G10 and the Sony RX 100 Mark two .

For point-and-shoot the G10 big and chunky and comfortable to hold.

Think all plastic .

Sony regardless of what is made of never really comfortable to hold or use shutter button is recess and too close to the right hand side.  The lens ring I don’t care what it’s made of but was highly sluggish and no tactile feel .

Canon GX5 Mark two placement of the shutter button find nicer and raised much nicer tactile feel and the lens ring again I don’t care if plastic it’s big it’s easy to turn and nice tactile feel .

Think the idea that if it’s made of metal it’s going to be sturdier is a flawed view.

Hello

The first thing i must say is, sorry my english is bad.

I have the cam 2 weeks and i am very happy with it.

The IQ is not perfect (at the ends of the zoom range ), but very good and better as my G7X2.

Sony does a better job with the AF performance, but for me is it not so important.

Here 2 pics

Probably not what you are interested in but I have just ordered a G5X Mk I as the more I have read up on the models and the competition the more the interfacing and dedicated EVF appealed to me against the IQ drawbacks, which I hopefully will not notice if I do not look too hard or indulge in comparisons. That is the theory anyway.

I suppose it is a case of if you can't take a joke keep out of the kitchen to mix a metaphor or two in any GAS induced madness.

Close your eyes and hope for the best... ?

Methinks it could be a pretty good little contender. Proof is in the pudding and I won't shy away from any peeping.

Will do.

Keep the images away from the electron microscope. That is important.

A few more thoughts + samples

The more I use it, the more I like it. It fulfills my needs perfectly and honestly, the sharpness of the lens continues to surprise me. At an aperture of f5.6, this small camera is impressive. Plus, editing images (jpg) is very easy compared to the Sony RX100 series - the colors are much closer to reality. I love it!

A few samples, edited in Lightroom mobile to my taste.
