Canon 700D: in autofocus mode pauses before taking photo

I'm a newb to photography experimenting with a Canon 700D.
I'm trying to get used to the autofocus modes.
I've noticed two things that are utterly perplexing:
1) Once I've gotten an object in focus, if I click the button right down there is a pause before the photo is taken.
2) There is a huge difference between what the screen shows me and the final image.
3) The image looks as if the aperture has been left open for a very long time, maybe even half a second, even when I've set the shutter speed to be very low.

What's going on here?

Hi Bob,

Welcome to the world of photography - and the Canon EOS R Talk forum!

Don't worry, but this is the wrong forum for your question - perhaps a Mod could move it across to the Canon Rebel (EOS 200D-800D) Talk forum?

In the meantime, let’s see what help we here can offer you -

1) I'd check your Drive Mode settings to make sure you’re not using one of the self-timer modes (e.g. Self-timer: 2 sec).

2) When you say ‘difference’ do you mean in terms of framing? It sounds like you’re using the rear display screen to frame your shot - i.e. 'Live View’, have you activated some kind of image magnification/ digital zoom function?

3) What Shooting Mode are you in - i.e. P, AV, TV, M or Other? In general, setting the shutter speed lower extends the time the shutter remains open, try increasing the shutter speed.

Any more details you can give about your camera set-up will assist any other responders to provide more specific advice.

I would suggest a factory reset of the body and try again. I suspect that this may be a used camera (since it seems to be new to you and not a new model), and if so, the previous owner may have left some odd settings.

Also, so sample photos with exif would be helpful.
