New camera

Hello DPR forum,

I've had a Canon 550d since it came out and am currently looking to upgrade to something newer.  Am I wasting my time looking at Canon (77D) or Nikon (7500D) APS-C cameras?  I keep reading here about how they are abandoning the APS-C DSLR format in favor of FF mirrorless.  I like the smaller, lighter cameras and lenses (not to mention I can't really afford the whole FF schema), but am a bit worried I'll be buying a system for which an updated lens will never be made.

Re: New camera

I can't predict the future but at least with the Canon you can use the EF and EF-S lenses so you will have lots of options for lenses whatever happens.

If something inexplicably extreme happens like  both EF and EF-S Canon mounts are declared to be obsolete and the market shifts then I would think that there would be lots of used high quality Canon "L" lenses selling at bargain basement prices as other people shift to whatever is the newest latest greatest thing.

I don't know anything about Nikon lenses but I would think they would be in a similar situation.

Re: New camera

I have a 77d and like it a lot, it's much like the 80d with a few less features and a lot less weight.

Having said that, you might wait for the new "90d" (exact name unknown right now) that's coming at the end of this month.

Which lenses do you have?
Mostly EF-s, or some EF's in there, too?

If you have a few EF lenses, you might even consider the EOS RP or EOS R.
The adapter lets you use ALL your older lenses, even the EF-s ones (although with a crop factor).

Re: New camera

Thanks for your thoughts.  I have the Canon 18-135 from 2010 (which isn't very sharp), the 24 f2.8 (which is), the 55-250, and a Sigma 17-70.

The new 90d, assuming it comes out, might be a good choice.

Re: New camera

I have been waiting for quite a few months to see what the 90D looks like.  I have a lot of Canon EF-S lenses which I like so I want to continue with APS-C.  I guess I would switch to a mirrorless system that would work with my lenses.  If not, I would leave Canon and start over.

Sigma, MetaBones and a few others make adapters for Canon lens mounts.  I use all my Canon lenses on my mirrorless Sony A6400 when I want to go out with a lighter weight camera.

Re: New camera

The way that I look at it, I'm not really buying a permanent system (that is, something that would be good for decades).  The reason is that the "system" is constantly changing.   My philosophy is Just to be happy with any upgrade and take pictures.  When it's time to change again years from now, gather the facts and then make an informed decision.  But that's in the future and who knows what the future brings?

When I got started with digital I expected to upgrade every 2-3 years.  I felt the same with my first DSLR in 2009.  I felt the same when a shutter failure forced me to upgrade again in 2011.  Now I am still using that camera.  I expect to buy the 90D and I now expect to be using it for a great many years.  We aren't seeing much for improved camera technology at least for the bigger cameras.

Re: New camera

Just FYI, If you are in the US the Canon refurbished web site is having a special with the 80D and two STM kit lenses for $700.

I would assume that it related to the pending announcement of the 90D.
