Re: Help with broken 16-50 f2-2.8

Thanks again; the cable is not soldered to the pcb, I disconnected the small part without a single problem.

But if the price is that, I have no problem in buying the whole piece...if I find it. Do you know a site in europe that could carry it?

If not, do you know the part # to be looked for on samsungparts?

Thanks again!

Here is a site in Australia byt with a lot of information, including what other models parts support.

Blow up diagrams here

Edit - is this it? http://www.electronicsmarket.com.au/ad96-00023a/samsung-assy-fpcb-contactxl1301-p-57117.html

Re: Help with broken 16-50 f2-2.8

Some considerations:

I tried opening some of my lenses (20-50, 18-55, 20mm prime). All of them have the flat cable soldered, so it can't be a replacement for the one in 16-50 S.

The only lens that "could" have the same cable is the 60mm macro, but I wouldn't want to sacrifice it.

Hence I need to order the part, BUT:

AD96-00023AASSY FPCB-CONTACT;XL1301

seems discontinued in Europe and can only be found in US and AU, with really high delivery price to Italy (not counting the customs).

AD41-01708A

seems to be a replacement for it, BUT looking at the image it seems it is just the flat cable (not the contacts) hence I'd have to find someone able to solder it to my existing contacts....

I don't know what to do.

Resoldering is something very simple for any electronic repair shop. If you cannot find one then I don't know what to recommend since learning on an expensive lens is not a good idea.

Re: Help with broken 16-50 f2-2.8

I'm pretty sure I could install the new part, if I had one. I tried mounting the lens with the damaged part and it was pretty easy.

The fact about soldering is that the damaged cable should be first detatched (desoldered?) from the connectors and then the new one should be soldered to them.

Do you think that this would be an easy task for an electronic shop?

Re: Help with broken 16-50 f2-2.8

This is it. The black part hosts the connectors, while the flat cable is soldered on it.

The replacement part I find is ONLY the flat cable.

Yes, it's something they do all day long. It's fairly simple if you have the tools (proper soldering iron and vacuum pump to suck the motlen solder), I've done it dozens of times, but I would strongly advise to take it to a shop.

Ok thanks a lot. Hence the very first thing to do is finding a shop in the nearby doing these things. It's pretty strange I know but this is going to be the tricky part.

I've found a shop within 50km. I'll order the part, have it soldered and get back to you to report.

Hello, let me report on my issue.

I had the flat cable ordered and soldered. Then I mounted the lens back and...it works flawlessly! That's great, I know, but:

  1. I noticed that 2 of the 4 screws keeping the lens sealed are sort of "stripped" in the sense that they will turn forever. This is really bad since I'm afraid that the lens can open up again, breaking the cable.
  2. The rear part of the barrel (which attaches to the front part, that's part #23 on the diagram posted by Otto) is simply "plugged" into, without any glue or adhesive tape. As the previous point, this is something that sets me afraid that the barrel can open again.

Hence, I'm hare again to ask for your (precious) help. How can I solve the above issues and make my lens as solid as it used to be?

Thanks in advance.

Well the quick and simple way to repair it is to put a tiny drop of super glue onto where the thread part of the little screw was, and to replace the screw into its place. Allow the glue time to cure, and it should be right for you to handle again. If you ever need to remove the screws again, they can easily be removed by breaking the seal of the super glue by turning the screw with the correct tool. But importantly for you, the screws will not simply fall out of their position. Just be careful to not put too much of the glue on the little screw or you may get the stuff dripping off and adhering to places on the lens that you don't wish it to be. Don't forget to test the repair before taking the lens outside. If the screws are falling out, before you use the super glue, After the glue has cured, turn your lens upside down over a table/desk with a cloth on, to help to prevent the screw bouncing and getting lost, and shake it, or tap the lens gently on the table to see if the either, or both of the screws dislodge. In not, you should be good to go. Good luck.

Have a good day.

Hello Taffy!

Thanks for your hint! I'll do that.

As Allan said - be very careful to not use too much of the glue and keep it ventilated until dry as it can leave marks on the glass (some more than others - test with a drop on a generic piece of glass and see if there is white "fog" around the drop).

Even if it's far from the glass?

Re: Help with broken 16-50 f2-2.8

I guess it would be fine but there is no downside to a small test? I'm just paranoid I tested two glues when I had to reattach the cosmetic ring on the front of the 30mm and one stained the glass, other did not. YMMV

Re: Help with broken 16-50 f2-2.8

Oh I simply didn't Imagine it could have that effect. How can I test? I mean, to simulate the use of the glue in the proximity of glass?
