A farewell to Pentax
13

I started with an *ist D and used most of the Pentax cameras up to and including the K-1. I've really loved using Pentax cameras and participating (well, lately, just hanging out) in this forum. Sadly, since the D800, then D850 and Z-7, I've used my Pentax systems less and less and after a year of zero use, I finally accepted that I'll never be pressing their shutter buttons again, so they've been packed up in a big heavy box and sent off to my ever wonderful dealer SRS Microsystems.

There seem to be many fewer forum members that I know, but thanks to all of you over the decades, it's been great.

I'm sure I'll drop in from time to time,

Sophie

Thanks for the plug for SRS. They're a dealer I was unaware of (being "overseas"), but I'll be browsing their listings

Good luck with your new equipment, I've heard some of it is actually quite good

Unfortunately, all you have to show us are some boxes that you're selling instead of great photos. What a shame. What did you shoot with Pentax all these years? Show us those photos. That's how you have a proper farewell...

Yes, SRS are excellent, I have used them for years. Their shop is well worth a visit.

Like the o/p, I'm in the process of switching systems and have part-exchanged several of my less used lenses. However rather than going down the full frame route, I've downsized to micro four thirds in the form of a Panasonic G9. My choice was driven by the need for more accurate and consistent AF without penalty in terms of IQ, weight or ergonomics, and it also had to be weather proof. The G9 has broadly fulfilled those requirements.

That said if Pentax brought out a mirrorless with a new mount, compact and lightweight lenses, and that lovely 24MP sensor, I'd be sorely tempted to switch back. Especially if it had the old K-5II form factor (and maybe a flip screen). Sadly, I don't think it's likely to happen!

Sadly your joining a growing number ....

That's a hefty load of kit.

I recently purchased a D800. AF left my k1 for dead but the files not as good.

Lucky I haven't got the D850 or z7 yet, I'd be smitten..... probably a D750 or D700 next.

I'm in Watford and SRS is my local they have a lot of stuff in there get all my accessories there like tripods adapters etc excellent for trying out cameras. I love the D850 although I don't have the Pentax system I'm a mix with Canon and Nikon and soon Sony just waiting for SRS to get the 200-600mm in stock for the Sony A9. I tend to keep all my old cameras I would have kept the K1 just for astro only.

I am a multi system user including pentax Nikon fujifilm.

I have used d 810 and d 750 also fujifilm XH1 plus my pentax gear k1ii and k5iis.

From my experience with these 3 systems I found the pentax files are the best and the layout is amazing.

Regarding the d810 it has many focus issues that Couldn't nail the focus in dark light compared to k1ii.

XH1 is the nearest camera to the pentax philosophy in design and ergonomics.

All cameras in this days are excellent and I don't find a major reason to switch system.

If you take a moment to see the OP history here, I think you'll find he has contributed to this forum often.... Just moved to another system a few years back

That's how you have a proper farewell...

I'm not sure there is a defined "proper" farewell here.  Maybe better to just wish them well and good luck?

Re: A farewell to Pentax

I've used SRS a few times for commissioned sales and they have provided an excellent service to me. It's a bitter sweet moment boxing up the kit to sell especially if the kit has been with you for a few years, some of mine was over 30 years. However I figured it's better that someone gets joy from using it rather than sitting in my cupboard. I've thought more people are leaving Pentax than joining however the speed at which SRS recently sold my Pentax kit gave me pause to think perhaps I was wrong it's just that less and less are posting here.....

Feel free, and best of luck with your new gear focus. If the Pentax kit isn't being used, then you're doing the right thing to let some one else enjoy it. It's like moving after living in the same house for decades; sometimes what you have, no matter how much loved, no longer fits your needs.

Take care,

Erm, I think you mean she.

To anyone in computing, particularly in the UK, over the last 30-40 years will probably know of Sophie and hold her in very high regard for her work at Acorn and then with ARM (Acorn Risc Machines). A significant loss to our community I’d say.

No I did not but did mean to say the OP with no gender specific note.  Sorry

No issue's with Focus on my D800 thus far.

In terms of layout, I think it's tough when I used Pentax for 10 years and it's all I knew. Now I'm getting use to my Nikon, it's pretty natural.

Files.... k1 mk1 beats D800.

Walkabout photography, I even prefer walking about with my k3 because of IBIS. Keeping the iso low  either handheld at ridiculous low speeds or on a post.

Good wishes from another *istD etc. etc. early adopter. Actually I’ve been drifting away from DPReview generally, but also seduced by the convenience of mirrorless and the lightness of M43. Still use the Pentax manual lenses though. If Pentax had a good mirrorless option with a large EVF I’d be back.

With any pentax camera I can reach any button even if I close my eyes but with Nikon it is another story " puzzle "

.in Z mount they copied pentax layout including the release button lens and no left buttons!

Files.... k1 mk1 beats D800.
