Recomend a wireless shutter (not IR) control for 550d?

Hi folks,

I am wanting to get a wireless shutter remote for my Canon 550d. I see Canon's offering for this is infrared and that you have to be in front of the camera to use it.

I don't want that. I want to use it for astrophotography and so I will be behind the camera.

I see that there are a bunch of 3rd party widgets. A lot of them are hot shoe mounted. This doesn't really work for me because the shoe is where I have the red dot finder used to align the camera. Although I suppose I don't have to put the widget in the hot shoe if I don't want to.

Any recommendations?

Canon EOS 550D (EOS Rebel T2i / EOS Kiss X4)

Yes, you can just not mount the release on the hotshoe.

If you have two android phones, you can do wireless liveview with the DSLR controller app, even with the t2i. You'd plug in the USB cable from the t2i to one phone, set it up as a wireless controller, and then use the same app to connect to the first phone and get live view and controls.

It's clunky, but it works. It's been a while since I tried that though.

Wow! I have a android tablet and a phone. I will have to try this!

Thanks for the tip!

Tried this over the weekend. It works well. Using a tablet as the second device means an easier to see image. Since I am using for astro, the red overlay is good too. No more killing my night vision looking at the too bright lcd on the  back of the camera.

Great! Glad it worked for you.

I used to use DSLR controller tethered with a cable often before and it worked fairly well. I believe it also lets you transfer RAW files, but it's slow, as expected.

I don't use it as much now that all of my bodies have wifi but I do remember testing the wireless tethering and it seemed pretty reliable. There was also a time when the Canon App gave me trouble after updating it and I just ended up using DSLR Controller with the built-in wifi of the camera.

All in all, it's a good app and the fine adjustments with manual focus might also be a good bonus for landscapes and astro.
