SX 70 Butterflies and flowers
3

Only 200 meters from where I live there is an area of wild flowers and grasses. Here there are many butterflies

N

Lately there have been some pictures taken with the SX50 and SX60, so now I thought the SX70 should be included too.

Comments are well come.

As with Avian these are very fine examples.  can you fill in as to what settings you use for focus and IS.  I have always used P mode, single shot and medium area focus/ exposure and struggle to get truly sharp photos with the SX70.  My old 50 actually has more predictable IQ.

I know, get out there and try everything myself and that I intend to do.  But why not let others do the hard work.

These are breathtakingly beautiful both artistically and technically. It's impossible to pick a favorite - so I won't try. Thanks for posting these from the 70. Do you have experience with the 50 or the 60, and if you do, is there a noticeable difference in image noise between those models and the 70?

Thanks.

I use P mode most often. If light is ok I lock ISO at 100. I always use spot autofocus. With the SX60 I always used -1/3 exposure, I do sometimes with the SX70 however, It is better for avoiding blown highlights. Sharpness and contrast one notch up.

When I shoot butterflies with tele macro ( 1365 mm ) and distance of 180-200 cm.  DOF is only about 5mm. I try to focus on the eye, but then the wings often become blurry.

There must be almost no wind. If the butterfly sits on a flower the slightest breath of wind makes the image blurry.

Hey Bill

I have experience  with 50 and 60.

Biggest differences: The SX70 have better autofocus, EVF, better to avoid blown highlights, DIGIC 8 gives the camera more power, faster in every way.

About noise:

Color is better at high ISO, and there is not a lot of noise at high ISO, but it impairs the detail.

SX70   100 ISO

SX60  100 ISO

SX 70   800 ISO

SX 60   800 ISO

SX70  1600 ISO

SX60   1600 ISO

SX70   3200 ISO

SX60   3200 ISO

These images are handheld with flash. JPG straight from the cameras only slightly cropped

The SX70 images are probably a little darker. I discovered afterwards that the exposure was - 1/3

Re: SX 70 Butterflies and flowers

Thanks Richard - The images in this post show adequate control of noise even at ISO800, but as with almost all images from the 1/2.3 sensor cameras, the crispness of detail falls off as ISO rises.

You have mastered the SX70, joining a small group on the Canon forum and the Nikon forum who are getting superb results from the small sensor cameras

Thanks.

I Think the noise is acceptabel, but you have to accept falls of crispness and detail.
