Admittedly, I would have bought the Olympus 17/1.8 if the store had it at the time, but I really wanted to support the brick & mortar store and I figure the Panasonic was close enough. Time will tell.

I can tell you though, that the Panny 20/1.7 is very sharp and I can't see any flaws with it.

The Olympus 14-42 f/3.5-5.6 is more versatile and much more compact when collapsed, but since it has the motor zoom, I don't like it quite as well.

Having a compact lens never worried me, I use an Olympus E-P5 with 12-40/2.8 and it works OK in the street as I use the screen and not the optional VF-2 and nobody seems to flinch away. That lens also has a black front, none of that white printing on the front ring and that helps the lens "disappear" somewhat despite its size.

Last trip though I used my Sony RX100 M6, again screen only and had 100% more fun with its "24-200mm" capability. So in that case small was good as it was easier to carry in a small belt pouch.

If some decree forced me to use a single small prime on my E-P5 then it would be the 17/1.8 as around 17mm is where most things happen for me.

Regards....Guy

Re: Panasonic 20 mm f/1.7

A common complaint on the 20mm is slow focus.  It was certainly true when I tried to use mine to catch my baby granddaughter. The 42.5mm f1.7 certainly works better on her.

I guess, if light is bright enough, a manual pre-focus at f4 or 5.6 might eliminate the focus issue.

20/1.7, or the 12-32 (used mainly as a 12/3.5), depending on how I'm feeling.

Quite nice actually. I remembered this sigma prime used to have a bad name!

Re: Favorite compact street photography lens? Go...

I just acquired a Lumix 12-32 f3.5-5.6 pancake that I am just getting used to - Paired with my EPL-8 it fits quite comfortably in my pants pocket - I have a VF-4 that I carry in the same pocket and attach when needed - I also use my Lumix 25mm f1.7 on the EPL-8 on occasion but it isn't quite as good a pocket fit -

All I need is 2 for the street.  42.5 and 15mm both f/1.7 for the 4K video and night.

Interesting...the 14 is such a bargain. Is it notable inferior in some way?

It is a 2.5, so a whole stop less. I find it underwhelming, and use the 12-32 instead.

When I got my GM5, the 14mm really appealed to me as a small lens to go with it, but I never ended up getting one because it just doesn’t have enough benefit over the 12-32. Somewhere around a stop of advantage, but otherwise the zoom covers it just fine.

My first choice too

But I mix it up, sometimes I'll take the 75/1.8 or a FE, just to force me to see things differently.
If I'm feeling lazy, the 12-40, but save that lens for other things.

In the absence of the 15/1.7, I'd have been quite happy with it.  Until you need the 1-stop for low-light/indoors shots where ISO 1600 is about as high as I want to go on my GM1.  ISO 3200 doesn't cut it for me

In any case, I've since repurposed it with a 0.76x wide converter = 10.6/f2.5 UWA prime

It's still a keeper!
