Hi, the new Power Delivery (PD) USB C charging devices are a step up from the older USB technology we've used for years. It is confusing that not all USB C is "Power Delivery" rated. Look for the "PD" designation.

For battery charging in-camera, I bought the following devices on Amazon for my G5Xii, and they all work great with the camera. The portable charger listed below (aka "battery brick") allows charging on-the-go. Prices are December 2019.

Anker 120V Wall Charger for USB C Power Delivery (PD) ($23 on Amazon)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GWQ2GJC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Anker Powerline USB C Cable (Power Delivery rated) ($12 on Amazon)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EMIIFCU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Anker PowerCore 10000 USB C PD Redux Portable Charger ($46 on Amazon)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PXMF52C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The battery brick listed above would theoretically have the capacity to charge the Canon's NB-13L battery about 6 or 7 times.

I've not tried Anker's PD rated USB C car charger (cigarette lighter), but assume it works too.

https://www.amazon.com/Charger-Anker-PowerDrive-Adapter-MacBook/dp/B071WYF9HP/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=Anker+PD+car+charger&qid=1577662602&sr=8-3

You can also find conventional USB chargers for the G5Xii NB-13L battery, but I would expect they charge pretty slow compared to the USB C PD. However, I assume they'd be fine for use in overnight charging.

My PD charger is about 1.5" x 1" x 0.7", less than 100 grams. It can do quick charging too. Cost about $30.

World already changes. IT changes fast. BTW, no car has backward compatibity with cart.

This is another ass backwards design and trying to justify it by saying its the future is extremely stupid. Power Delivery is designed for high power output, usb-c laptops mostly. and the spec can go up to 100w of power. This is a CAMERA. It uses the same dinky battery as older models.

Nice work! Keep on trying to be looked smart.

PD is not just for high power. It's for faster charging. Only IQ-deficiency photographers can't think what the fast charging mean. Not their fault. They may not know that this world has iPhone. They love to buy dozen batteries while complaining that one battery has juice for only 200 shots.

Canon may be not smart or intelligent. So most they can do is earning billions while the smart hobbyist photographer is obsessing with DPR posting.

Charging is not magic. It's just electricity. Watts. Voltages and amperes.

Each device can be charged using certain voltage(s), and it has a maximum amperage that it will suck out of the charger (if the charger can provide as much). The Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0 protocol for example can provide 18W max, in the form of 9 volts x 2 amperes, or 12 watts and 1.5 amperes. (It can use 5 volts too, but then it won't reach 18W for reasons that I won't get into here.)

That is to say, a phone with QC3.0 will be charged with 9V and 2A max. If the charger can push 2A at 9V then that's what it'll be. If the charger can only push 1.5A, then that's what's flowing. If the charger can push 10A, the phone will still "suck" 2A and not the full 10A.

PD is a (smart?) protocol where a high-powered charger can provide different specs for different devices. So yes, it CAN charge quickly IF the device has a charging protocol (i.e. a combination of voltage and ampere) that will charge it quickly.

You can have a 100W PD charger but your phone will only be charged at 18W. (Which pales in comparison to the newer 20, 25, 30, 40W standards out there -- which the charger CAN push but the phone won't pull.)

It's like a highway, capable of accommodating high-speed cars, but it doesn't mean that all cars passing through will do so at high speed. It still depends on the car.

It's all just voltages and amperes, man.

If the old charger is only 3W then an ancient phone charger capable of 5V and 2A (i.e. 10W) will charge the battery mighty fine. No PD required.

Hi there

I have the G7X Powershot Mark III and am having some real probs as I am using it to live stream via Zoom.  The battery does not last much longer than an hour when fully charged. I have just ordered a bunch of the USB C to USB C cables and a PD charger but what I need to know is if this camera will charge when it is running as I really need this feature.  If not can you advise a camera which can be charged while in use as I need to be able to run webinars for 4 hours too and would like to have good quality camera but battery a real issue.  Thank you, Kate

Curious, how are you live-streaming to Zoom? PC, Mac, USB, WiFi?

Sounds better than my built-in webcam on my MacBook, hence the curiosity.

You need this btw...

It's OOS everywhere I've looked.

Maybe you can find one used on eBay, elsewhere? Or a compatible third party?

You have to leave the battery door open... They use em in BestBuy's and the like for floor models I believe.

The USB C wont run like a AC adapter.

You can only use it to charge only.

Hi, I would like to ask if using that setup we can only charge or we can still record videos and shoot pictures? Thank you

Using my MacBook Pro on USB-C; it’ll self charge while doing Zoom.

I vastly prefer my EOS R over it for zoom as the G5X II contrast hunts vs the R does not in Zoom in low light.

Also, I can charge the battery in-camera with a regular USB charge (non PD).

Can you please confirm if you are absolutely sure about this? Have you tried?

Many forum users have said the opposite, ie that you require PD even to charge, not just to power the camera.

Another reason why requiring PD makes no sense is that PD powerbanks tend to be bigger and bulkier; the whole point of a compact like the g5xii or the g7xiii is that they are, well, compact and can fit in a coat pocket or a small bag. I have a number of non-PD powerbanks with integrated cables but I have not found a single PD powerbank with integrated cables - which makes sense because PD is meant for power-hungry devices, not for a camera with a small battery. This means I can carry a Sony RX with my powerbank in a small sling bag, but, to do the same with these Canons, I'd need a heavier powerbank with non-integrated cable, more weight, more bulk, less convenience, and all of this for what? To maybe charge a little faster a battery?

Spot on!

Was very disappointed that I was unable to USB charge my new USB chargeable G5X MkII until I read this post which illuminated to me the wonders of PD charging and after getting a PD wall charger and USB-C wire I am now all set with USB charging working.

Thanks!

Pathetic this thing doesnt charge over usb A to usb c cable. So many cameras do and fast. It s just a tiny battery. This thing should charge anywhere with anything. Period

After reading all the contributions i found, not one gave a concrete named equipment to utilize usb charging for a canon g5x mark ii. A lot of words, no meaning.

Apple USB-C charger for MacBook Air works wonderfully.
