Heartily fed up with bags that dangle and slip around, I found what looks to have been a clearance sale for the "Tamrac Jazz Photo Sling Bag 76 v2.0"

That's here in England - seems to still be a bit dearer on Amazon USA - where the price is about $55.

Nice mix of compartments and moveable dividers, and stays in place on my back, until swung round and opened up!

Re: What camera bag

Just that plus batteries and charger. It will be my wife's only camera and lens. She is downsizing from NIkon d3400 and Tamron 18-270.

If she is like me and would prefer a discreet, non-photo bag, go to a pawn shop, luggage shop and the like, and look for a nice shoulder bag in which her camera/lens can ride face down, like a top loader, making for quick removal.

I have several depending on what I'm carrying.

In my opinion the only incontestable answer is "a camera bag you like, that fits what you want it to fit".

I have several camera bags.  I have a Lowepro toploader for when I just want my camera and one lens (typically the 14-140mm II, for daylight; or a prime, for indoor).   I have a sling bag for carrying several lenses in lens cases, maybe a towel or a spare t-shirt, lunch ...  I have used it occasionally, but the top loader gets the most use.  And my most recent addition was an inexpensive rectangular bag that can hold the camera with one lens plus another (small) lens.  This is useful if I'm going somewhere where I'll be shooting outdoors and in (dim) indoors.

I have these three bags because I like them.  They don't serve the same purpose.  So even form me, answering "what camera bag" would not settle on one.

Peak Design Sling 5L if I only have camera and 0-1 extra lens, 10L if I need to carry multiple lenses.

Full disclosure: I like all PD stuff, including straps, clips and backpacks!

Re: What camera bag

I recently got a Tenba Skyline and I'm very surprised by the quality, didn't expect it to be this good. Check their range.

Re: I really like ThinkTank Retrospective & Peak Design's stuff

I have the ThinkTank Retrospective 5, which is a nice and small shoulder bag. It's casual, elegant, comfortable, and has nice features like a hidden rain cover. I've been using it for years and it is very durable.

Peak Design makes some really nice stuff as well, and my next backpack is going to be their Everyday Backpack 20L. Their Everyday Messenger and their sling are also quite nice.

There are camera bags that are lighter and/or less expensive... but I think these are worth it. I have a lighter and less expensive Domke f5xb, but I much prefer the Retrospective 5. Once they are packed I can't tell a difference in the weight, and the Retrospective 5 is more comfortable, has more features, and is easier to organize/use. Domke makes nice stuff though.

Well...

Style vs substance vs weight...
As it's for your wife perhaps you want a bag she can use as her only bag.
I like padded messenger bags but she may not.
Plus I like lighter bags and a lot of photo bags aren't that light.
Also depends on country...

If they still make it, the Tamrac Zoom25 4225 fits up to G85 and possibly, although I haven't seen one to verify the size, G9 like a glove with elasticated side pockets for extra batteries and the Oly lens-cap fisheye plus a few SD cards and cable. No room for a mains battery charger though, but if you get a GX camera, most now charge using USB if you want.

This is my G7 with 14/140, complete with lens hood attached, inside the bag. A wriststrap is attached to the camera and hangs out of the far side which snaps off for swapping as required. There's room inside for a conventional neck strap, around the lens.

Olympus E-M10 and Pany GX bodies fit fine in there too, with more room to spare.

couldn't wish for a better fit

Think Tank Mirrorless Mover 20 will do the job for you, including charger and a few accessories. It will hold either of my camera bodies along with a mounted zoom with lens hood, such as my 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro, with comfortable room to spare.

I'm with you on this matter. I like a bag that doesn't have to be a camera bag, but will hold the ones you want. I've a few and they cost next to nothing.

It doesn't even have to be a camera bag. Just about any bag/purse of the right size will work. I fit all my kit, including a lens bigger than that and 3 other lenses, into a small travel purse.

Re: What camera bag

I have gone through a few bags and none of  them where perfect . The Wandrd comes close though 👍. I use it for my every day back pack .

For hiking I take a  Shimdo  back pack and I use a Crumpler shoulder bag if I am just taking  only the camera with one lens and nothing else.
