Canon Digital Rebel 300D at the thrift store

I finally found a DSLR at the Portland Goodwill store that usually has a pile of old film SLRs. It was sitting there with a battery and no lens for $20. I went to another Goodwill and found the 18-55mm EF-S IS kit lens for $5. The battery charged up (I can charge anything with paperclips, clip leads, and rubber bands) and the camera works fine. The lens has a broken filter thread, broken focus motor mechanism, and will only work from f/5 to f/32 but works fine in MF. Apparently the camera has a shutter count of only 4170, although the grip rubber is almost gone. Perfectly clean sensor, a little mirror dust, no rubber eyepiece, clean "Canon EOS Digital" camera strap.

So, good deal or is this just the first sign of the death of the DSLR?

Good luck with that. The Drebel has a tiny dark viewfinder which is pretty bad for manual focus unless you’re wide angle at f/11

I have the 350D but my dad in law still has his 300D. Any EF-S or EF lens will work on it. True the viewfinder is rather small but it remains a great camera that does the job.

My 350D still takes great pictures. I don't think DSLRs are dead, they'll be in use for years to come if not another decade.

Took that one of my fireplace this past winter with the 350D. I have a similar one taken with my 7D. Aside from being a little more grainy, the 350D is as sharp as the 7D.

Fireplace close up.

Regards,
There is always something to shoot/snap, you just have to know how to do it and have the right gear.
