Trip to France/Swiss

Hi everyone,

Hope you guys can guide me to a better trip and better photos

I will travel very very soon to France(Paris) and Swiss and i will carry for my first time on a trip my DLSR Canon EOS 200D/Rebel SL2.

I have these equipment lens:

  • 18-55mm
  • 55-250 mm
  • UV/CPL/FLD and Multiple ND filters
  • 2 sun covers for lens

As a beginner i don´t know what is the best "kit" to carry on day-walk and take great photos, i have the following questions:

  • what lens should i use in Paris?
  • what lens should i use to take pictures to nature in swiss and france?
  • what filters should i use and combine?

Also, shoud i set some specific settings on my camera for various situations?

Hope you guys can help me

Thanks

I have both lenses and I travel to Paris often. I think the 18-55 will cover you 90% outdoor. The 55-250 will be used occasionally, most for subjects across Seine.  Neither of them is good for indoor, such as inside Louvre, or evening. If I were you, I may replace the 55-250 with a 24mm pancake or the 50mm 1.8.

Hi, thanks for the fast response

So do you recomend to use almost the entire time my 18-55mm but also carry with me 55-250mm? or just let it home?

About the filters do you have some advice?

Thanks

I guess it depends on how you feel. Sometimes I travel with lots of lenses in my bag but it stresses me out changing to find the best shot!  I think experience will help you know. The 55-250 though can probably slide in to a loose pocket to be honest or wont take much space in a bag, and it is very light.

I did consider the ef-s 15-85 lens as a good lens for this type of trip. But instead i got a 17-50 2.8 for the low light. Not sure if any would be suitable for you. However, your two lenses from 18-250 in total should cover nearly every eventuality i'd think. Should be an enjoyable trip for you!

Hum at the moment i´m not thinking to buy any lens. Just want to use this 2 as many as i can and gain more experience in photography.

I bought the 55-250mm to sports and animals at long distance, i will try to use it in best way.

Thank you!

i took the 55-250 to India and took great shots of wild green parakeets and also of big mammals in a zoo. And got some great in flight shots at a bird of prey sanctuary show in the U.K. It also gave me some great landscape shots. I think you’ll have great fun with it!

Attached is an example image I like from the 55-250 lens. I’m not sure adding from my phone has shown the full quality. But it looks great on the PC. If it looks low quality I’ll try to add from the Pc tomorrow.

No but I did shoot it in raw file format and edit in Adobe Lightroom. So I don’t use the in camera settings much. I’m sure someone could advise on the best camera settings though if you are shooting in JPG.

normally I shoot birds in shutter priority mode with a high ish shutter speed. But this was a very quick shot as It arrived and was probably on aperture priority mode still.

Still a very beatifull photo!

I am trying to find some tutorial or tips to learn how to manage the settings and that stuff like aperture and shutter speed, the lights etc. If you know some please tell me

Depends on what you like to shoot. I do alot of architecture and street/city scape stuff...and I find stuff in Europe pretty crammed together...so I do more wide than long. My 18-135 is more than long enough. 10-18 comes in handy.

I'd take your 18-55 and leave the rest at home.

I have these equipment lens:

  • 18-55mm
  • 55-250 mm
  • UV/CPL/FLD and Multiple ND filters
  • 2 sun covers for lens

Some equipment to add if you don't already have them and just didn't mention them.

At least one spare battery

Charger and a international plug adapter.

Basic lens cleaning material, I just use lens tissue mainly to to just brush dust off.

A PDF of your camera manual on something like a phone, tablet, or laptop in case you need to refer to it about some question.

A few things to consider.

It would be good to have some way to backup your photos, I normally take a laptop so I can also look at photos on a larger screen.  Some people have online backups which is great but hotel internet connections are often not all that great.   You may want to keep your exposed SD cards in someplace like your money belt so that if your camera bag is stolen you will still have the pictures.

I only use a UV filter and a polarizer.  You may want to leave your other filters at home unless you have a specific plan for them.

If you don't normally shot in RAW then change your camera setting to shoot RAW + JPEG.  It will mean that you don't get as many photos on an SD card but they are cheap. Don't worry about trying to figure out how to process RAW images now but it will be nice to have then if you have a problem with an otherwise great photo or if you want to use the images five years from now when you know more about RAW.

Purse snatchings can be a problem in Europe and that includes camera bags and cameras.  I have one with a longer strap so I can have my camera bag on my side with the strap on the other side of my neck so the strap goes across my body.  That way no one can just grab my bag off my shoulder and run.  When you are at someplace like a restaurant if you just put your camera bag on a chair someone is liable to grab it and run, or sneak it off the chair.  Secure it well.

Re: Trip to France/Swiss

My primary SL2 travel lenses consist of: EF-S 10-18mm; EF-S 18-135mm; EF-S 55-250mm. Since they take up so little space, I also take EF 50mm f/1.8 and EF-S 24mm f/2.8. Pretty light and versatile kit.

If traveling with my 80D, Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 replaces the EF-S 18-135mm.

Still trying to bond with my M6 and its smaller lenses, but so far it does not look like it will supplant the SL2 as a primary travel body. I will bring it with me on an upcoming trip to Japan as a back up. The fact that I dislike the handling without using a cage negates much of the size/weight advantage.
