The second day out day at local park (Dragonflies, Cormorant) with SX
4

Took out the SX60 for second time yesterday. This time along with another superzoom, the hardly praised Panasonic FZ80.

Yesterday it was with the D7500.

I did a reset on the SX60, since I was getting bad results with the AF in anything but Auto mode.

I set IS to continuous, Servo AF off and was able to dial in negative EV (harsh sun shining on subjects).

Shutter speeds are still a bit too low, but wanted to keep ISO down..compromise

Compared to the FZ80, which I've taken over 100,000 images with...I'd say (to my surprise)..the SX60 did better, but not in all areas.

AF was better with FZ. fps bursts...both did great.

Colors...well that was no surprise, the SXis much better. Tonality and dynamic range...well...I think the SX also did better here.

At such low shutter speeds...I can't expect super sharp results.

Second day out fared much better. I also think atmospheric conditions are not the best on a 90 degree F  humid afternoon.

Will post more thoughts next time

Really great series for the SX60.  As not original size hard to get a reading on sharpness but these are very good on all counts.  Then too good post processing can make quite a difference.  I had the 60 for a few weeks and now the 70.  Neither better on IQ than the SX50.  It just seems Canon (and others) push the optics  to the max with little to no gain in IQ.  The few upgraded benefits are appreciated but a few  downgrades not so much.

Thanks.

I use FastStone Image Viewer, adjusting Shadow/highlight, Levels, Color,  and sharpness. Also cropping and Cloning , as needed.

Very basic processing is what I'm saying.

No Layers, Masks, and a host of other options found in PhotoShop and the like.

SX50 was tough to beat in I.Q. Possibly the best of all the 1/2.3" type sensors.

It was weak in fps, EVF (size , refresh rate and resolution)  and the EVF blackout, AF at telephoto end and others that Nikon and Panasonic seemed to offer.

It just seems Canon (and others) push the optics to the max with little to no gain in IQ.

Some models did better , other not so.

The SX60 will always be known to DPreviewers as a step down in I.Q.  and that the predecessor, SX50 was better :).

How are you liking your SX70, DonA2 ?

The few upgraded benefits are appreciated but a few downgrades not so much.

Yeah..happens quite often  with so many of the camera's I owned, come to think of it

Would you say the I.Q. is  similar for SX60/70?

Thanks

Looks great for 1200+mm and 1/2.3" sensor. Agree about atmospherics, at these focal lengths and distances it can kill sharpness on even the highest end equipment. I think a shot like that cormorant would likely improve in sharpness on a crisp morning vs afternoon. Dragonfly probably not by a noticeable amount due to closer distance.

Thanks saaber1.

Yep. I keep forgetting this

I think so. Can't predict when he will show up. Maybe this Saturday I will bring him breakfast...think he likes fish

Dragonfly probably not by a noticeable amount due to closer distance.

Agree.
Thanks for your comments.
