and also the 1.4TC. Did I say it was sweltering hot? All shot in RAW and only minor adjustments in Photoshop, no sharpening applied.

Nice shots!  And animal Eye AF is on its way too!  I'll be interested to see how my A9 and 100-400 work with animal face detection.

Why using F8 ?

Pictures look more on the flat side and not very interesting I think.

So, the teleconverter limits maximum aperture - learned something today

Anyway, the images do not look great to me personally, maybe it's just me.

What would you have done differently?

Since the background/environment is not nice, I would have tried to get rid of it, either by using bigger aperture and if not possible then zooming in more and making more detailed shot of the face of the animal instead

The background in the second picture is nice. I agree that a tighter crop on the first picture would remove the people in the background so that it would look less like a zoo picture.

The purpose of this post is to show what the camera, lens and TC can do, not my post processing skills.  If i was considering hanging this on the wall, I would invest the time. As previously mentioned the minimum aperture when using the 1.4 TC is F8  and 560MM reach.

As expected from your OP: "no sharpening applied."

As a wise old friend of mine once said, 'purpose is the essence."

BTW, nice demo of what this combo can do.

I was especially impressed with the focusing speed even with the TC, not the lion or lioness were moving very fast.
