Gift ?

I paid full (non discounted) initial release price for my E-M1 II and there were no free giveaways of Speedlights or lenses.

And I paid near AU$100 for each of 3 batteries and a couple of hundred for a battery grip.

No way I see any  gift horses here

I was referring to the recent 3.0 firmware update, which I believe was the genesis of the posters original post.

BTW, I too paid full boat for my E-M1 II, as did my wife. We both preordered ours at 3am the first morning it was available. Best purchase we made in a long time (until our Olympus 12-100’s came along, that is)

Yeah my mk2 was a full price pre-order as well, paid close to full for the EM1X at release as well

when the mk2 was released they was huge fanfare that we would be getting yearly updates over a four year cycle, seeing as we are approaching the 3yr mark i'd say the second major release is behind schedule and hardly a gift horse. It is however highly welcome and great to see what they could port from the 1X... the only miss i think is the lack of my menu .... maybe that is purely a eeprom/memory limit.

BUT

the OP seems to want a range of things that are uniquely Panasonic and it's hard to work out if it's a wish list or just a not looking after my personal want whine.

Thank you!

That's a great compilation of possible improvements to the EM1-II that I'm sure discerning prospective buyers would appreciate!

Can't determine if this is tongue in check or not .....

Let's add even more complexity for what? seems like it's a personally wish whine because Pany doesn't offer a key hardware feature the OP desires ... How about whining to and about Pany......

The only E-M1X feature I would have liked to try was the “build it yourself “ focus grouping. But, maybe that is just my curiosity, and I would never have used it anyway.

So far I like the 3.0 firmware even if it was something I paid for in the initial purchase price, but didn’t realize it. I’ve paid more and got less on more than one occasion.

so far the AF performance on the EM1X has been excellent but i do have a couple of use cases to try out custom focus groups just no driving need to create them.

The "My Menu" is something i miss immediately in the mk2

Not really.   It's essentially a simple problem of basic physics that Olympus actually mentioned at the Edmonton EM1x release: a smaller body will have difficulty dissipating the heat of a powerful processor under heavy use, especially in hot conditions. And the near universal black colour makes this worse.  That's a major reason for the double CPU has to be larger and have a special heat pipe.

What really upsets me about the latest firmware and this applies to both the E-M1 MKII and the E-M1X.

No matter what I try with the latest updates, my manual focus lenses still can't auto focus. I've tried all the new settings and features and none of them allow AF with MF lenses.

I mean come on, what the heck is wrong with Olympus for goodness sake.

Danny,

Your just not doing it right, my MF lenses AF just fine on my mk2 and 1X with the new firmware.

The key is the already included organic adapter between the camera and lens focusing motor that utilises some of the fastest feedback loops known to humankind, the inbuilt processing capability of the adapter provides accurate fast AF functionality as long as the peaking is engaged via the firmware.

It has been found by testers that the zoom function can be useful in assisting the AF routines built into the adapter.

Hang on and I'll try ESP from my tiny brain on it. Hmmmmmm, emmmmmm, ummmmm ..... nope nothing. The Canon FD teles just won't move. Darn it! Maybe they need a small motor in them.

Heck even the AI stuff doesn't work either. Dead as a dodo. Mind you, I do automatically know what the difference is between a train and a BIF.

Danny.

I've shot pro shoots for 13 hours straight with the em52 in the middle of summer and its never let me down. I don't think the em12 will work up a sweat.

Brianric and I may have argued very intensely about the root causes the fact remains it is possible for an EM1mk2 to trigger it's internal overheat warning but it's unlikely to trigger without additional heating from the sun on the body.

I have shoot 10k plus images in a day and never seen it again after the one and only time in near 40c ambient and direct sun on the camera body for 4+hrs in the middle of the day.

It's also worth remembering the EM1mk2 was the first Oly body to incorporate an over temperature warning as far as i am aware

The em52 does as well. Just switch the battery out. Easy. Or use the grip battery only.

Olympus has big advantages over Panasonic like Phase detection AF. I need them so, I am using Olympus. However there are some specific functions that Olympus can learn from Panasonic and add to their cameras for some specific shooting situations.

And thats 100% true of every camera manufacturer out there; They all have pros/cons and if they all prioritized the same functions/features, it would be rather generic. You will never (ever) find the perfect camera; buy what you feel suits your needs and work around the features you that dont.

Exactly how I feel.  I do like many of Panasonic's features and where Panny is better than Olympus I wish they would have made a few of those improvements on the EM1X.  I'm amazed that the EVF and screen have not been significantly improved for example.

Very Nice

I think that was a thoughtful and valid list of shortcomings both real and perceived. I don't agree with or need every one, but I have some others that you did not list etc. Several on your list I noticed right away, so you're not alone in your critiques.  Doesn't change the fact that these are outstanding cameras simply to point out some shortcomings or requests for change.

That anyone should have some sort of fanperson problem with a thoughtful post like yours amazes me, but welcome to the internet I guess...

Good post. Thanks for taking the time. I hope Olympus is listening.

Cheers,
