I've necro'ed my original sx720 thread to avoid polluting TheAlex's any further.

This is a great, and very timely thread. Appreciate everyone's feedback.

My question is--how are all these with video? Especially at twilight, or maybe indoors in restaurants?

I was really looking forward to the G7X Mark III, which is allegedly right around the corner. But truth is, I have a trip coming up, and it simply won't be available in time.

I need an ultra-compact for some photos, but mostly video. The flip-up screen is a must. I am thinking about trying one of these significantly-less-expensive models to see how it does, or at least bridge me to the G7X Mark III. (The Sony RX models are simply too expensive.)

Looking forward to any feedback. Much appreciated, folks!

The Canon SX60 video isn't great towards the darker end of twilight, with noticeable grain/artefacts, so I imagine the SX740 is similar.

I would agree that in general most all 1/2.3" sensor cameras are going to give reduced video performance in low light (cameras vary in how they apply noise reduction though).

For low light video I would go for a 1" sensor camera if possible.  I haven't shot lower light video with sx730 at all as I recall but I have with the 1" sensor g7xII, rx100 iii,  and g9xII.  Also Canon, Nikon, and Sony APS-C and Nikon full frame.  G7xII gives really nice lower light video but really cannot touch full frame of course for lower light performance.

I moved to an 80D a couple of years ago (love it!) but still shoot with my SX40 HS occasionally.  The other night, for instance, when I attempted some shots of Saturn.  None of my results were clear, and in retrospect I wonder whether I should have deactivated its stability control.  My SLR lenses detect when they are on a tripod, so forgetting to turn off their IS usually isn't a problem.  And yes, the 80D is a veritable sumo wrestler compared with the SX40 HS.  I accept the trade-off.

One needs to take time to learn ANY camera. Find it's strengths and weaknesses.

The Panasonic ZS series give plenty bang for the buck, IMHO.

Here's some from a ZS60:

cropped from 720mm

full zoom at ISO 3200!!

Excellent O.I.S.  this one at 1/40th shutter (low light)

ISO 400 at 720mm  1/40th

1/30th

All handheld. Tripod not needed, even with slow shutter speeds and at telephoto end.

If you're using a laser for light on distant animals/people, aren't you worried that you might accidentally blind someone, or some creature?

Superb images, as always with you. I think it's worthwhile to point out that the rest of us might not be able to get such excellent results.

Always useful to know the camera isn't the limiting factor.

Infrared flashlight, not laser

Exactly. I see posts of poeple trying to shoot a long lens camera out of a moving car at some distant bird, and they say it’s a bad camera because the photo is not clear. Also I see reviews of poeple shooting a half bright sky/half green foreground and say camera is bad because photo is too dark. They don’t take the time to even learn how the camera works, that there are other modes than “auto”, or even the most basic concepts of photography. But they eagerly await the new arrival of the next camera coming out because maybe that one will give them “more sharpness in the corners”.

Excellent shots with the ZS60!
