I have never seen the Chinon branded version.

Chinon did make many still and movie cameras for other brands including the Kodak digital from the start. As you stated , after a few years of producing Kodak cameras , Kodak became the major shareholder and then compleatly owned Chinon.

This is probably the best known Chinon made camera :

You have here an example of the same camera or almost, under different names

The quintuplets

Chinon ES-3000 (1995)
Promaster Color Digital ONE (1995)
Dycam DC-10C (1995)
Dakota DCC-9500 (1995)
and finally the
Kodak DC50 Digital Camera (1996)

Re: Chinon ES-1000

Very good.

I once wrote an article showing 18 different branded versions of the same digital camera. From memory it was one made by Premier (now owned by Foxconn).

Around that time I remember asking a product manager of another OEM company how much they charged to modify the cosmetic of a camera so that it did not look the same as the competitor's  model. His comment was that, for example, to shift the flash from one end to the middle it would cost about 1 million dollars.

ouch!

I have never seen the Chinon camera. I wonder if the IQ would be the same as the Kodak or maybe it was tweaked differently.

I doubt very much that at the time they bothered with different firmware.

I think that Chinon only sold those cameras in certain countries o probably not directly competing with kodak anyway.

With the better known brands I believe that in their mid to top models both the firmware as well as the coating in the lens was propirietary.

For example, Canon,Sony,Panasonic and a couple of other brands, in the early days , all sold the same (probably Canon made) lens called Canon,Zeiss and Leica according to the camera it was used with.

The lens was the same but the coating as different for each version.

Kodak DC20 ...

I totally agree with this explanation.
See here my comparison (just for fun) with my Nikon D500
